Ampeg Fliptop in a stompbox......The Flipster.

Honestly, I look at the fly-by-night amateurs and wonder if they're selling pedals or Sprague caps and true-bypass switches.

I 100% agree with you, and I didn't mean to impose...with the whole 'sekret skemahtiks' thing. It's great to see other DIYers doing it the honest way. :)

As for the order of my FETs and gain on them.
It changed since last time, and I like it MUCH better. Basically;

Less voltage at the gain stages = more distortion (less headroom), and less fidelity

More voltage at the gain stages = less distortion (more headroom), and more fidelity

Right now I'm liking this

Q1 J201 | 7v
Q2 J201 | 7v
Q3 J201 | 7v
Q4 J201 | 7v

I got started assembling my kit, and discovered that they forgot to include the JFETs! Fortunately I had some MPF102's around. I also am reminded how annoying/confusing those 1% resistor codes can be. I ordered my kit with the pre-drilled box, but the circuitboard is so small I may end up using a smaller housing anyway.
 
Well, after taking it out of the preamp box to tinker with it, I don't really think it matters all that much... you use the trimpots for all the gainstages anyways. I wouldn't say 15v makes enough difference to go out of your way to use it :hmm:

If you're buying a kit from OLC see if he will toss in a few different fets (MPF 102, 2N5457 etc..) for you for a buck or two

Also I've been playing around with the settings and I really like what I had before as well. You should REALLY play around with it...I'm so indecisive.

Ooh, that's a great mnemonic! I've been stuck on "Roy G. Biv" since art classes in grade school. The colors weren't troubling me, it was the meaning of the third band. The kit includes 220 ohm, 2.2K, and 22K resistors; so the red-red is obvious, but then distinguishing e.g. the 220 from the 2.2K is what got me.

I'll be happy to send you the missing JFETs (if you want them). I make mistakes, but I accept responsibility and stand behind the products all the way. I just need to hear from my customers so I can make it right.

Regarding what Astralis said about additional JFETs:
I do that at no cost to my customers. I'm not trying to profit at every turn of a transaction. If you request something additional (aside from the more expensive components like switches), I'll include them for free.

As a matter of fact, the Flipster kits ship with 8 JFETs (but only requires 4)... four MPF102 and four J201 so you can get the gain where you want it.

Pleas email me if you would like me to send the 8 JFETs to you.

Those clips sound great! That's pretty close to the sound that I'm looking for. The thing I like is that is gets more "tubey" as you increase the gain, to my ears anyway. I'm going to set mine up similar to yours.

What type of bass did you use for that clip?

Thanks karter, yeah it really does even more through a rig. When you roll off the gain quite a bit it gets pretty clean sounding too. Very nice pre, only thing I don't like much about it is the way it handles effets :hmm: .

The bass I'm using in all of the clips is an Ibanez SR900 with mostly dead strings.

I'll upload clips as I go along, but this happens to be one of my favorite dirty boosters/overdrives:

edit: woops, forgot to mention my signal path for the CMOS Booster. It's bass to DI to the board, thats why it kinda sounds thin... I'm really just giving an example of the breakup you get from CD4049UBE chips

Drive set to 6. Its more of a soft fuzz to give a bit of motown texture.... I probably shoulda put a little more pepper on it.

My fets are J201s in the first 3 posn.s and MF102 in the 4th stage.
Voltages at drains:
5.9v
5.9v
6.5v
5.3v

I usually use it in the effects loop set at about 7 which sits best with our guitard's Fender DeVille.
