And different players demand different duty cycles.

like i said if its cutting out and crackling. moving up to the 500 watt head actually gives you whats needed.
you may not think you needed 500 watts, you probably dont. but the power supply is little weak for that 500 watts
but actually gives you the 250/300 watts you actually need

Likewise could be the usual issues with low line voltage.

Or even if line voltage is fine.
The power cord gets wound up, unwound, pulled on pushed on etc etc

just like instrument cables. they go bad from this.

Always a good idea to replace the power cord with a heavy duty new cord.
there is also protection circuitry in the power supply, low voltage or current surges will trigger shut off

and a intermittent not so good power cord will trigger those easily

aside from the resolved driver chips that blew up, the PF series had the usual power supply issues.
sometimes its non issue, sometimes it is. obviously a player that demands a higher duty cycle will most likely kill a power supply faster.
could be 3 years could be 7 years. Eventually you reach the 3000 hours that the 3000 hr caps are rated for lol.
some last longer some dont. when the diodes or inrush thermistor finally blow up, youll know when its over
 
I love Ampeg, but the "don't turn your gain up to 3:00" response feels like a cop-out to me.

OP's setting are not extreme, maybe the manufacturer shouldn't release an amp that can't function under normal operating conditions. Either design a better amp or at least put a limit/governor on the input gain to keep this from happening.
