Ampeg PF-350 vs SVT Micro VR

I have to do a NAD/NCD thread pretty quickly. I bought the PF-350 and one SVT210av and I've used it at practice with a medium drummer and guitarist who likes to get loud now and then. The bass amp/cab barely had a chance to produce a tone it was so low. I think the next two purchase will be for one more SVT210av to make a PF-350/2 x SVT210av double stack, and the Ampeg SVT-CL 100 watt head and 210 cab, dressed in black decor. I want to keep the 100 watt micro stack as my practice amp in the house, and the PF-350/SVT210's as my gigging rig.

I also own 2 Gallien Kruegers and 2 EX110's which are also incredible for the size, cost I got them for. It reminds me of when I was a pro touring musician in the 80's. I had two girlfriends in two different towns, and both were gorgeous dolls! Choices, choices!

There's something drawing me away from the GK's to the Ampeg. The only reason I'm keeping everything is that at times there have been postings about Ampeg electronic failures and GK is bullet-proof stuff. My Ampeg stuff is very reliable and sounds excellent, I guess I have to quit worrying about reliability.

EDIT: Why is everyone's SVT210av cab have two black tabs for the grill cloth on bottom and mine doesn't? It's brand new, less than two weeks old. Probably changed it up, I imagine.

It may be that they just got tucked under the grill when they were installed.

If you want to pull the grill off to check, the best way to do it, at least on the older cabs, is to loosen one of the screws on the Ampeg logo, grab on to it with a pair of pliers/channel locks (with a cloth between the teeth so as not to scratch the black screw), and pull. My 1973 V4 cab grill came right off doing that. This was a tip I found in one of the Ampeg threads ('cause I'm not that smart :)), so TB again for the win!

Thanks!

Hello guys. This is the first post on TB im having the same innerdebate reguarding to pf350 or the micro vr. Currently im using a peavey 215 with the black widows as my main rig. which head would be the better out if the two?
They both sound the same to me, so your choice comes down to looks vs power. Me, I'd go for power if I could only pick one.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I would appreciate some input on the fan noise of the Micro VR and the PF-350.

I just got a b-stock/open box Micro VR. I had read here that some people had issues with the fan noise but thought I would take a chance on it anyway. Well, I’m astounded at how loud that little fan is! And it’s always on... It was immediately clear that it’s not going to work for me.

I am a basement player. I can play pretty loud but my room is fairly quiet. Are all Micro VR’s this loud, or are some worse than others? How about the PF-350...is it significantly quieter, and is the fan also on all the time? I don’t need the extra wattage, and I would miss the looks and mosfet power amp of the Micro VR, but if the PF-350 is much quieter I may have to go with it instead.

On the other hand, if they’re both pretty loud, I guess I have to go back to my BDDI. But I’d really prefer to have a “real” amp. I can’t think of any piece of music gear that has ever had such a high level of operating noise!

Thanks,

Gary

I have 2 of the micro vr heads a version1 and a version2. Both have equally loud fans, but the 60 cycle hum in my head drowns that out.

no experience with the pf-350 because the micro vr is cooler looking.

I myself prefer the design and sound of the Micro-VR over the PF-350.

Everything but that fan. :(

350 does have a much quieter fan, but the little Micro VR is so cool looking that I've often used it on gigs just because it looks cool.

100%. It’s gonna break my heart to send it back, but I’ve ordered a PF-350 for comparison. Hope you’re right about them sounding the same, because the Micro VR makes a godlike thunder in my little studio!
