Ampeg PF-350 vs SVT Micro VR

@Inconnu - not yet, still waiting for one or the other to turn up used at a fair price.

I do feel that if I was to end up with the PF-20T it would probably be in addition to my Micro VR or eventually a PF-50T, whereas if I find the PF-50T I probably wouldn’t seek out the PF-20T unless I somehow found it lacking in some way.

I’m curious enough about both that I am willing to let whatever shows up first influence/make my decision.

Used PF-20T has shown up. I had actually decided to wait for a PF-50T, but I am very tempted.

He might not even ship it, which would make my decision for me. Or, knowing me, I will probably change my mind several times until someone buys it out from under me. :)

I did very recently get a PF-112, and at the very least I like that it has more low end than the SVT-210AV. So now I’m a bit too antsy to get rid of the Micro VR and get one of the tube Portaflexes…for no good reason.

Those are two totally differently bass rigs. You need them both. But I understand waiting for the PF50T. Have you taken your PF112 to GC to try out a PF20T vs PF50T?

Hey @JimmyM - have you ever compared the volume of the PF-50T and the Micro VR? Is it a significant difference? Do you use either one at home?

(Thanks for all your help, by the way!)

I’m still pretty much decided to pick up whichever one comes up first at a reasonable price. I know the smart money’s on the PF-50T for versatility, but I still crush hard on the PF-20T from time to time.

I have and the Micro VR is louder

So, I finally found a PF-350T for a decent price. Will be putting my Micro VR mini stack up for sale soon…

Anyway, I can confirm that, even at basement levels, the Micro VR is louder and the PF-50T can be tamed pretty easily. The PF-50T into a PF-112 can be made to sound very similar to the Micro VR into the SVT-210, although it is obviously more versatile. Both sound great, but the PF-50T has a much fuller, more ballsy sound.

(I want to spend a little more time comparing them back and forth. I’ve never had an amp with bass/treble boost and mid frequency switch. Obviously it will never sound exactly the same, but I’d like to find the settings that come closest.)

My frustration with the PF-50T is that it hums quite loudly at idle. Not noticeable while playing, but annoying when everything else is quiet. I bought it online and specifically asked the seller whether it hummed or had the humbuster mod and he said it wasn’t necessary. So, that makes me angry, but it looks like a quick and simple fix that I can hopefully handle myself, and then I think I will be very happy with it. Fingers crossed, at least… :)

Thanks,

Gary

I have a Kustom 1x15, would a micro VR be loud enough to fill a room for rehearsals and such without pa support, or would I be better off with the pf-350?

In the olden days, the largest amp Kustom would hook up to one of their 1x15’s was a K150 head which put out approximately 75W RMS. The speaker cabinet would fart out before you could turn it all the way up.

Using a Micro VR or a PF-350 to drive a K115 cabinet would probably end in frustration at the very best and could quickly destroy the speaker.

I would suggest rethinking your strategy and I wish you good luck.

Well then, in that case I bet it will sound great with either head. Jimmy has already piped up on this question in another thread -- that basically no volume difference between these two heads. I'd go for the micro VR being a class A/B amp might [subjectively] sound better.
Gotta clarify a bit…there’s a volume difference…it’s noticeable but just not as drastic as the numbers may suggest.

I wouldn’t recommend it, since nobody but the designers know the temperature sense point(s), the slope/gain required and the possibility of the components connecting to the sensors having voltage on them (common in some designs).
