Ampeg pf-800 update: shut down!

Why would anyone suggest that a brand new, out of the box amp, with problems as severe as a shutdown, be taken to a warranty center rather than returned? I can see getting another one on the idea that it's one-off problem, but trying to fix something that made it past QC, still malfunctions, and also has numerous reports of major problems, is a fool's errand.
I agree with this 100%. I feel like if I buy something and it's brand new and it is not working properly then I shouldn't have to do anything other than return it and be sent another of the same, get my money back or exchange it. There is no way I should have to send it to be repaired or looked at and have to wait 6 weeks or however long to get it back and hope it works.

4 string jazz bass. I usually have the bass knob on the amp set to 1 or 2 o'clock. Nothing crazy. No loud drummer because I mostly just play for fun in my studio. Nothing I'm doing should cause the amp to shut down. I don't feel that any of the settings are drastic. It has cut out with gain at noon and volume at 1, bass at 2, mid at noon and treble at noon. There is no way that should happen. The amps not even being pushed at those settings..

Wow...I could not agree more. Those are very reasonable settings...even if the map was pushing air for a B-String.

Mine does the same on occasion but usually with a 5’er, and only if I have the bottom cranked a bit.

I have just learned to work inside of the parameters to prevent this.

Good luck with your new amp!

Because they’ll probably just send back a new one.

Sorry you're having problems, but honestly, it's a fluke. I know plenty of folks who have had zero problems with their PF800's. Mine is 4 years old now and never shut off like that. Every now and then a bad one slips through, but you can say that about any amp made.

Sure are a lot of flukes floating around.

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that for every broken one, there's hundreds that aren't, but you'll never hear about them because the vast majority of people on sites like this only pop up when they have a problem with their amps, and those who are regulars pop up in every thread about whatever amp.

ROTFLMAO 15 guys in the thread having issues and Jimmy's like there's nothing to see here boys move along now.

That's just hilarious!
I counted 5, wise guy. Did I say these people didn't have problems? No I did not. Do not twist my words around to make it sound like I said things I never said. That's amateur hour on the internet.

So it seems to me like maybe some of these manufacturers are putting the operating specs for these ultralight heads right at the edge of their capability. If you go just past the Edge the amps shut off.

Case in point I have the little Trace Elliot Elf head and matching 2x8 cab. I have some pretty aggressive playing technique and occasionally I'm guilty of sending a spike through with my lower strings e or B doesn't seem to matter if it's a 4 or 5 string bass which I play both but on the lower notes that I hit kind of hard or aggressively you might say with a large 4 ohm cab the amp will shut down for a couple of seconds. With the small 2x8 8 ohm cab it doesn't do it at all and with a large 4 ohm cab I can back off the volume a little bit and it won't happen so I'm able to control it but it's like the amp is just on the edge there's no percentage of overage built in it's right on the dime.

Have had the PF500 for over three years, first year with a 115 at 8 ohms, since then with a 210 and 115 at 4 ohms. It gets probably 8 - 9 hours use a week, and we play quite loud. Not a single issue. Guess I am one of the few lucky ones.

Haven’t checked every reply but quick question.

Has it always cut out at the same place? Your 350 previously too? As in always at the same place you jam?
Yes I have a small home studio and my gear never leaves it. But the studio is filled with gear from guitar amps and cabs to mics and recording hardware and the PF amps are the only pieces of equipment that have ever given me a problem.
