Ampeg PF500/350, part 4

Somebody may have answered this already, so I do apologise.

But I am looking to downsize my 410HLF cab with B2-RE head, to the PF500 with a SVT15e.

The 410HLF has served me well, but I love the warm and beefy tone I get from my Ashdown Electric Blue 15" combo and after playing and hearing the SVT15E, its definitely on my wish list.

Again I apologise for the repetitive questioning, but will the impedance of the pf500 at 8 ohms (300 watts) and the speaker being 200 at 8 ohms be fine?

If i remember reading somewhere correctly, its always better to overpower your speakers than underpower?

Why not just get the PF115? I have two and if my memory serves me right they sound better to me overall compared to the 15E I had. Overall more "full" sound.

I did look at it, but unfortunately in Belfast, there aren't many music shops that stock Ampeg, or music shops in general! :)

It would just be the one I am after, but thanks for your opinion, as that's exactly the tone I love. Warm and full.

I just sold my PF350 and got a PF500. I run either one PF115 or 2 PF115 cabs. I don't think I could possibly dial the warm and full out if I tried :bassist:

Just got an email telling me that the pf500 I ordered last week has been shipped, so I'll probably have it at the end of the week...

Looking forward to trying my first lightweight!

Where did you order from? The reason I ask is that currently Ampeg is offering $30 off from authorized dealers for either cab and the PF500 head, and $20 off the PF350 head.
I bought mine from Musician's Friend, and got head and cab for a total of $740. I had to select the parts separately to get the $60 off, but it was inconsequential. And I had the rig in about 3 days from ordering it.

I don't live in the US, so I'm guessing the offer doesn't apply here, not even sure if we have "authorized" dealers here in Norway.
Also, the only reason it took a while before it got shipped was because the dealer didn't have any in stock. I've ordered some pedals and bits n' pieces from them before, and they're usually quick to deliver.

Anyways, it's on its way now, so I'm a happy camper! :bassist:

Nope, that's BS.

However, I would get the PF115 over the 15e if you like what a 410hlf does. The 15e is voiced more like an 810e or a 410e on the bottom, while the PF115 is voiced more like the 410HLF. Doesn't go quite as low, but it goes darn low.

I have the single 210 cab and while it's not "concert" loud, it's plenty loud for almost anything else.
I also initially had a problem of pushing it too hard when I was trying to find my initial settings, and it growled a lot, but I turned the compression up a bit more and cut the gain a little and it was clean and loud.
I haven't had the opportunity to get the volume knob past 1 o'clock yet (and that's with the volume on the bass way down most of the time) due to neighbors and such, but I still rattle the windows and stuff every time I play.
2 of those cabs would be monsterous.
I think it would be great if Ampag created a taller cabinet like an 810 or a 215 with the fliptop and a handle and wheels in the back like their 410 cabs.

I find it just can't quite keep up with 2 guitars in a rock band. Almost, but I feel bad when it starts shaking hard, and in the summer, it won't cut it outdoors. I wan't to be sure the second one will get the job done.

Hard to predict, but two of them will do at least what a 410 can do, so if a 410 has worked for you in the past, it'll work if you use two PF cabs.

There is no past, I'm getting better and bigger amps for the first time. Thats why I'm so unsure of how loud certain sizes are and stuff. I started with an old Traynor combo (ts25b from the 70s), and then got the pf500 and pf210. I'm only 16, and I don't gig enough or make enough money to support anything larger (I think). On top of that, I'm not strong enough to lug a 610 around!

Hmmm...no past? Well I know how you kids are ;) but the typical rig for kids going from a practice combo to a rig they can jam rock with is a 300w amp and a 410. If you're playing doom, it might not be enough, but it seems to work well enough for most folks.

My first real cabinet had 2 15" speakers in it, made from 3/4 inch plywood, and the thing weighed a TON. My car visibly sunk down every time I loaded it with the cab. No wheels on it either.
Second cab was a 210/118 Peavy. Also heavier than I could manage at the time. I almostlost it down the stairs at Smith's Olde bar in Atlanta. Guy behind me was close enough to catch it as I lost it. Had he been just a couple stairs lower...

Anyway, back on topic. Obviously money plays a part in your decision at this point. And at your age, most guitarists don't understand that volume has nothing to do with ability. Good musicians want to mix well with the whole band and not try to be the only sound anyone hears (which is what happens a lot when young people start bands. Guitarist is loud, so the drummer gets loud, so the bassist turns up and the singer is reverse lip-syncing because he's actually singing, but you can't hear him over everyone else.)
I understand why you are looking for more. But here are a few things to consider. The PF500 is plenty loud with 1 cab. If you need to expand, then a second PF210 is your best bet, or find a used ampeg 410 or 610 that has the handle and wheels on the back.
If you ask the guys in the band to (yes, I'm getting older) turn it down a little then your sound wouldn't be lost in the wash of guitars.

Oh yeah Jimmy, us kids know that louder and faster is always better, right? :p Were actually pretty good for that, our guitar player is actually getting into playing jazz quite a bit, which is good, and when we jam it turns into funky blues, really. I'd say we aren't your typical loud, fast kids, just judging from a couple other bands at our school.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not attempting to drown everyone else out. I just want to be able to sit well at outdoor stuff where the guitars have pa support and I don't (usually :/). I also don't like spending money, so I want a good rig that will last me a while. I think I'm going to rent another pf210 just to be sure its all good, which I'm sure it will be.

the Shop JUST recieved the replcement power board today, installed, and it does not work. The tech noted that there are additional diodes on the board, maybe associated with the power transformer? at any rate, new board won't even power the main lights - just the red fault light.

I asked about a direct replacement, and they said they don't know if they can get that approved.

I asked them to check.......
the dance begins.......
(or continues.....)
