Ampeg PF500/PF350 - part 3, I think

But playing around with the gain and compressor settings tightened things up a bit, and gave it more "thump" instead of just "boom". Once dialed in, it kicked serious arse :ninja:

I have the same problem with my Pf-500 head rattling after I mounted it to the PF/210 which I just got on Thursday. I didn't have this issue with the head until I mounted it- never happened when I was using it with another cab. Not a huge issue but enough to be irritating. What screws did you tighten? Thanks for any help.

Does anyone remember what that was? I am wondering if they have made no changes since my first head's build, or if rev C denotes an upgrade.

I assume you're talking re the 7 pro?
Rev C means they've made changes afaik, & I think, changes to the guts, so the cutting out prob is no more.
I've got a rev C 7 pro & it's worked flawlessly & superbly! Love it!
If u r talking about a pf amp- I dunno

No; I bought another PF500, and its motherboard is a rev C.

I did several things so not sure what helped. To me the rattling sounded more like it was from the cabinet than the head; but was difficult to pinpoint. I took the lid off the 210 and snugged up the screws that holds the front board that has the Ampeg logo on it. I also adjusted the the screws holding the head to the lid. I can't remember but I may have actually loosened them up a bit. Then finally I played around with the position of the lid on the 210. Try getting it good and snug against the front of the cab. There can be quite a bit of play in the position of the lid.

I'm loving the B-15N with these cabs. Totally puts me in the mind of the 77 B-15N that I no longer have. Would love to see them come out with a lower power tube head that would look cool on top of these cabs. An SVT would probably make these cabs pop, too. Might try that in the near future.

Nice pictures Jimmy, and nice of you to show me more of the electric bass by the double bass pictures ;)
Btw, is you p bass active? I kind of used to seeing 3 knobs on a passive Fender.

Regarding the PF350 and the B15, both look just as natural on these cabs.

I can clearly you VT deluxe, what is the other pedals you have there? I know you have an Hartke distortion pedal.

P Lyte has Duncan Quarter Pounders on it currently, wired passive VVTT. The upright is an Upton Hawkes with a Clef Revolution Solo II piezo pickup. The pedals are the transmitters for the X2 wirelesses on each bass, a VT Deluxe, and a Hartke FT50 tuner, which is the bomb as far as pocket tuners go. I do have a Bass Attack and I use it sometimes, but I got a little out of control with the pedals for a while and I've scaled way back again to bare minimum. And on gigs where I'm not doubling, I don't even bother with the VTD. I think everyone else prefers it that way, too. It was a bit much with the phase shifting and the synth pedal all the time.

Buzzing/rattling fixed- I took a risk and removed the top cover on the Pf-500 and reseated all the screws(tough to get them back in and lined up). Problem is solved- it only happened at certain places on the neck- gone now.

Did a show this weekend with unknown house sound, so I brought along the 1x10 cab, which i used with the pf-500...Its still my favorite head, and it just works as a small monitor...I could hear it just fine from 20 feet away with no stage volume to fight with. Loved it. Wes

Jimmy, a V4BH or SVT hangs off the edges of the cabs about 1" on either side. The feet of the head sit right next to the cab's edges. It'd look a little loopy but I bet it'd sound great. :smug:

Wes, I was considering the very same thing with my "TB110" that Duke suggested out of Parts Express parts.

I made one when that idea was still pretty fresh, sealed the leaks, and forgot I had it until two days ago when I put it up against the PF115HE and it held up impressively for a single 10. I'd also like to make another one at old prices. ;)

So far no cutting out issues with my head. To be honest though the guitarist I play with is one of those great players who doesn't need a massive wall of amps to get a killer tone. He uses either a 15 watt Fender Blues Jr. or a 40 watt Traynor Custom Valve 40 with a single 12. My PF500 doesn't even break a sweat up against those two amps.

I have cranked it up REAL loud with both my Hartke HX-115 HyDrives here at home for 20 to 30 minutes at a stretch with no issues. I always set the gain first, then adjust tone and readjust gain if needed, and finally dial in just a small bit of compression. Could be that's why I don't have issues, or maybe mine's just a good unit.

I've thought all along that the cutting out issue was due to the preamp design in that it's very sensitive to higher gain and compressor settings. I think the preamp just doesn't react well to the high settings and over compensates by clamping the signal too much or possibly kicking in the limiter too soon.

Honestly, at this price point you can hardly expect a caddy but even a chevy should do it's job without issues. So far happy with mine.

used my pf500 amp and pf210 cab for another gig this past weekend and worked awesome again !!! ( no cutting out issues and plenty loud) heres another youtube video for your viewing or chuckling pleasure lol
