Ampeg PF500/PF350 Pt II.5

i was reading the manual just now and it states to depress the pad if the indicator light is flashing regularly. but its distorting without even flashing. I can make it flash though, and heavily distort when i turn up the gain knob.

oh well this is no issue, i was really just curious. maybe ill call Ampeg tomorrow just to see what they have to say about it. just for piece of mind.

False alarm... Tried the DI again this morning before the sound guy was there and it works just fine. Apparently he forgot to turn a receiver (or something) on when I tried it at practice on Thursday. :rollno: Since I'm behind the house speakers, I couldn't tell if I was in the mains or not.

Crisis averted, DI works great. (I used it this morning without telling the sound guy I switched and he thought I sounded good. Lol)

I just tried stacking my PF-210 on top of my SVT-115 and the casters FIT in the grooves on the SVT. :hyper:

Prior to putting the casters on I tried it and the feet on the bottom of the 210 did not line up and was not real steady. Not the best looking stack but I like that I can get that 210 up in the air a bit.

Friday's gig was better. Outside. Input pad off this time, which got my amp output very usable again. Gain was low...between 8 and 9 o'clock to get the DI out at a normal level, but this level is still hotter than what I get with the input pad on. Not enough input to clip the preamp though, and the amp wasn't at full power because of it). Post EQ, but set to 0's on the bass/mid/treb. -40dB pad was off. I thought it rocked all night in the FOH. Sounded really good. On a side note, I really like how this amp sounds in my IEM mix as well.

I still can use it pre -EQ, but I never do that anyhow.

Can anybody try to describe the sound of a PF500 vs B15, SVP-CL, SVP-Pro, or SVT-CL? I know it's all relative, but any insight would be great. I'm not sure I'll be able to try it out beforehand...

I'm strongly considering picking up the PF500 & 115 cab for a compact & lightish gigging setup. I just need to make sure it's got enough volume to cover a small bar situation without PA support for a 3 piece cover band. The guitarist is using a 1X12 combo and the drummer is not a hard hitter. I'd rather not add a 2nd cab under most circumstances, but I'm not totally against it if it's desperately needed for certain situations. I'd like to have a 1 trip kit if possible...

I'd love to get a legit B15 or B15R, I'm not not sure that fits my 1 trip kit or volume requirements.

That is all. These things are heavy to try and move without casters and awkward due to one handle on top.

I agree! I bought two Ampeg style black with black stitching, vintage style handles from Amplified Parts to solve this issue. They didn't come with any hardware, but I had the right size screws on hand for the job. I measured to where I wanted the handles to be ergonomically for my 55 year old back on my PF210HE cab, and it's a much easier load to haul around. In fact I did a rehearsal session yesterday and my back was grateful for the new handles. It might not be politically correct for some Portaflex cosmetic purists, but damn it, it's my rig and my back. It does not detract from the vintage vibe imho. However if you want modern spring loaded handles, that could be done aftermarket by the owner, but going vintage style was an easy-peasy install.

Bassgod, you can get a nearly perfect B15 sound or a nearly perfect SVT-CL sound from the PF500, it's all in the EQ and cabinet. Running through a 1x15 with bass @ 2:30, mid @ 10:30, selector on 3, it sounds just like a B15. Running through a 4 (or 8) x 10 with bass at 11:00, mid @ 4:00, selector on r4, it sounds like a SVT.

A PF115 with a PF500 will more than keep up with the group you're describing.

I have never used a compressor (FOH always does on my channel though), but am messing around with this one. It will absolutely limit if you crank it up. It will reduces the overall DI signal, squashing it, if you let it. I don't really know what it sounds like coming out of a cab, but it doesn't click in the DI, which is great. It will also just grab the heavy peaks, or somewhere in between.

I just went to GC during lunch and gave the PF500/PF210 a go round. I seemed to like it, although it was difficult to hear with all the other guys "playing" in the bass room. I wish I could have used it myself with one of my basses...when I was using an SR5 it seemed so muffled sounding which I think was due to super dead/dirty strings.

I'm still not completely sold yet, but it does seem to be right around what I'm looking for. The 210 cab was pretty small and I assume the 115 is about the same size?

Can anyone tell me what the depth is from front to back on the flip top thing? Just in case I decide to go with one of the cabs, but not the head I'd like to know how much mounting room I have for another amp.
