Ampeg PF500/PF350 Pt II.5

I'm thinking about adding a different speaker cab to my PF-500 amp instead of taking the Portaflex 1-15 cab (possibly for bigger gigs) Would you suggest getting a B115e cab or SVT-15e cab? This is separate cab, not stacked with Portaflex cab. And Im only interested in these two with 15's so not interested in 4-10's etc. Which of the two cabs would be better with new PF-500 amp ?

I first tested the PF500 paired with an SVT-115e, and I love the combo. But I do like the PF115HE a bit more...

On a side note, I would love to try this with the PN-115HLF...

Here is one for you guys (after testing the DI out of my PF-500 at home with a cheap mixer, as well as our Soundcraft gig mixer last night).

I have a DI level issue. It's either too hot, or not even usable. I tried a couple of things below, and I can't achieve what I want. I used different basses (MTD Kingston, Warwick $$, Spector NS that is known to have a little less output compared to my other basses),and a Mexican P. My cab was a single 10" with an S2010 I use as as personal monitor.

Bass plugged into head. Pad OFF. Compressor off. Gain just below 1 or I hear the preamp start to distort in the speaker, even with the volume almost off. Clip light will just start to blink when I really dig in. Seems like the the level is just right. EQ all straight up on amp and bass. EFX loop at 0. Sounds fantastic. Plenty of power into the cab on stage above 2 o'clock. Just like you want it, until you plug in the DI. POST EQ. At 0dB, it's crushing the DI output. You have to turn the trim on the mixers all the way down just to get it in the yellow. If I press -40 dBon the DI, it goes down to one or two green bars on the mixer PFL. Unusable.
Now hitting the -15dB input pad on the front, I can dime the gain and it won't clip the preamp (Sounds clean and no red light). Volume at 3 oclock is barely audible in a practice room. Definately not enough signal for the amp to produce even 100 watts. -40 db on DI cuts the signal so much I see nothing at the PFL on the mixer. 0 dB is just right with the gain around noon, but like I said, almost no amp output. This is how I ran last night. No stage volume, but my In ears and house were rockin.
Now, if I go PRE EQ on the DI, with or without the 0/-40 dB pad, the DI signal is so hot that I can't even get the PFL out of the red on either one. It does this with all the basses. This is supposed to be a uneffected/unboosted signal right after the mute, but before the preamp section. Pre DI is unusable. Really weird issue. What do you guys think? Who has actually used their DI?
Thanks!
Wes

Ampeg is actually making those PN cabs about 4 miles from my house but I doubt I'd be able to try any out locally. :hmm:
Same location as Bergantino and Mackie.

I was wondering if they were going to keep the Mackie/EAW presence there after the buyout. Haven't been by there in a while though.

On a Berg note, it's too bad you can't go to the factory to buy the things. I'd love to try out one of his cabs locally, but the closest dealer is in NYC. Though I'm sure he doesn't want a bunch of people coming in and out and no one purchasing so I guess I can understand it. Still.

We tried for a factory tour of Bergantino a few years back but that was a no go. Maybe Ampeg might be more open to it. I know they have a vid of the factory and the making of those cabs.

About the after buyout: the signage is still EAW and then another with LOUD and Mackie. So, I'm assuming they're staying.

That media fire link gave me a pop up ad and my machine blocked a trojan.

Maybe Youtube just as an audio file would be a better choice.

PS: I have fixed well over 1,000 machines with viruses and spyware. I didn't "click" on anything.

Very strange. Never had that happen before and I've been on there sharing files for quite some time. I've cleaned my share of PC too so I understand where you're coming from. I'll have a look and see where I can upload it to.

edit just checked it with all 3 of my browsers IE, Chrome, Firefox with pop-ups enabled and my Norton AV Online running and everything was OK. I'll move it just in case

just did a totally new post with updated link.

Thanks

@ wes. The di is super hot. I tried it into a peavey powered mixer and had to use the 40db pad which in turn gave me almost no signal unless I about pegged the channel I was in. The the unpadded signal was so hot I could not use it pre or post.

I ended up using the 25db pad on the mixer channel the next night and it was great. I wish they would have made a level control for the di or they just would have made it more like a normal di signal from most amps.

I wonder if there is a inline pad adaptor we could use just in case a mixer does not have an adequate pad for this super hot di? I'm guessing the di signal may be controled by the gain? Which would suck because you need to crank the gain up pretty high to get that great Ampeg sound from your rig.

There was a problem with my OP on this so I deleted it and here's the new re post. Hope it works better on the link now. Thanks for fenderhutz for the alert on the previous link.

Well I finally got my ZOOM H4 back after being repaired so I just did a short 35 or 40 second recording to test it. Figured I'd post it up just for fun.

I'm running the PF-500 through one of my Hartke HyDrive HX115's and using the built in mics on the H4 placed on a stand about 5 feet away. Using my 08 Black/Maple P with LaBella Deep Talkin flats that have been on the bass for a month or so. Not too much playing time on them so far. I have a push/pull tone control that uses a .1 cap on one setting and the other is the stock .05. I'm on the .1 side.

Amp settings are comp on 2, gain on 7 w/clip light blinking a bit if I dig in, bass is on 7, mid on 2 w/selector in #2 position, treble on 6, fx mix 0, master on just past 3. Vol on bass up all the way and tone control rolled back just a bit.

So here's the link.

@ Wes

My DI is also a very hot when not using the pad. It's alright when I do use it though. The gain doesn't have to go ridiculously high on the desk when I use the pad either. We only use a cheap Behringer desk for our in ears. I do run the gain at around 1:30, but my Mustang is a '76 and has a lower output than modern basses. Perhaps look into buying something like this: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

To everyone else, I'm in the studio right now, re-amping bass, and I thought I'd share a quick picture.

I've got a U87, an RE20 and a D112 plus the DI out. It's sounding all kinds of sweet... :bassist:

I tried the DI on mine on Thursday at church choir practice and the -40dB pad worked pretty good.

HOWEVER... The actual sound guy wanted to adjust some levels on some of his hardware because different gear means different levels and we figured out that the DI level was controlled by the Master Volume. Like, with the volume knob all the way down, no signal went through the DI. I had the DI set to POST-EQ, but that still doesn't seem right and the manual just says the DI is "controlled and modified by the tone controls, and the effects loop."

I know gear fairly well and have never experienced this. Anyone else have the same thing happen? Doesn't seem normal.
