Ampeg PF500/PF350

I went to the GC in Syracuse, headed straight for the PF350 and PF500 heads. I turned both on and my boner for the portaflex reissue melted away. Those fans are frickin' loud. I went from "ORDER NOW UNSEEN" to "wait 6-8 months and get one on Ebay." I'm at te very least going to wait until the cabs come out and I can try them matched up. I haven't given up, I've readjusted my excitement for them.

I don't think there's an incredulity smiley on this board, too bad.

NM, found it.

So, your conclusion is that the PF heads are out of the running for bedroom jamming?

Are the concerns over the fan noise because everyone wants to use these for recording, or because you're concerned about playing in a library?

I didn't even notice the fan noise when playing the PF heads I've tried out... But, didn't consider it from a recording standpoint (still can't imagine you'd hear the fan over any playing, even while recording).

IMHO, the "fan noise issue" is just some lame "Seinfeld" type of superficial excuse for not going out with/buying this amp. :D

ya, you kids are spoiled these days. ever hear an original svt fan? that's loud. i specifically listened to the fans in those heads to see if the complaints were legit. i've heard way louder in more expensive gear.

My favorite quote has always been "A manual is just some other man's opinion" lol but I do find myself looking at them more these days. Spending high dollar on stuff I really dont want to mess it up.

I got to Guitar Center the other day and they had both the 350 and the 500 in stock. Played them through a 410HLF. Must say I was very impressed. Two things, didn't see any problem with volume on either one, and heard no noticeable noise from the fan. It is GC so there was some background noise and in your house or practice space you might find this different, but I really liked the amps. The had great tone good grind when you push hard on the pre and an all around good feel to them.

No not at all. For bedroom jamming (or in my case livingroom) it's my Gallien-Krueger MBS-III.

I'm saying that I was just excited as all hell and now I can see these things going for way cheap on E-bay in a few months due to the fan noise. That's it.

Fan noise don't mean a damn thing when gigging out but alot of folks don't gig out.

They'll pick up a PF350 cause of it's price point, play it in the bedroom, get mad at the fan and pit it up on E-bay. Where I'll swoop on it, get it cheap, and gig it out.

um, yeah, sure.

only on tb have i ever heard of anyone giving a rat's ass about any fans, and it's never from people who play in bands.

The solution to a noisy fan...

played on of these today through one of those Acoustic 8x10s. sounded like a nice amp to me, I just kept the EQ's set at noon, the gain around 3 and and master pretty low so as not to disturb cromagnons.

I did see the clip light blinking at me. Do the same "keep the Ampeg light on" rules apply for these amps?

I don't really know what I'm doing, I know when something sounds good though.

I don't understand the complaints about the fan.
