Ampeg repair issue, SVT-300 power amp.. advice please.

So Ive got an Ampeg SVT300 rackmount power amp. Basically the power amp of an SVT. Its always sounded phenomenal. I usually drive it with a Reiner JGR preamp. If you know that preamp you'd know that it can drive the hell out of an amp with lots of headroom.

anyway... I usually have the preamp set with the gain about 11 oclock, master at noon and the eq mostly flat. At this setting I usually ran the power amp at about 3 or 4 (from 1-10... or near 9 or 10 oclock on the dial). That gave me loads of volume and throbbing presence.

Well, one week I went to practice and for some reason that seemed quiet, so I turned it up to 5 (noon) and thought "maybe I remembered wrong". The next week I had to turn it up to 7 (about 2oclock on the dial). I knew something was definitely wrong. (Those settings running into the power section of my other tube amps produce still the volume and heft I was used to on the Ampeg.)

So I dont know when it was last serviced but I decided to take it to Protech, which is the nearest tech over 2 hours away. I told them what it was doing, and that in my uneducated guess perhaps it was the tubes, but please check everything out and let me know.. They said it would be a "couple weeks".

A month goes by and I dont hear anything so I call. They put me on the phone with the tech who says "So I checked out your amp a few weeks ago and youre right, its only putting out about 50% power and it needs a new set of tubes. These are pretty complicated builds so I put it aside till I get another chance to look at it. Im gonna order you tubes and it should be ready next week". I tell him to get me EHXs. He then calls me back the next day and says that he put in the new tubes and it was still doing 50% but my problem was that it needs a good preamp to drive it enough (NO poopie!!!!) and perhaps I wasnt driving it enough and that even with my old tubes it would put out the full 300watts with a good signal.

He calls me a week later and says the new tubes are in and biased and its putting out 300 watts and is all fixed. I go get it. I pay out $400 for the work and tubes. I get it home and plug it in and guess what..... I gotta turn it up to 7 still to get any volume and it distorts easily getting anywhere near the volume I used to run clean.

so... I have two questions.

1) What else could it be?
2) What is a justified and reasonable remedy to expect for this situation considering I waited 5 weeks on a "couple week" job, spent $400 for a repair and new tubes I didnt need, drove twice a 4 hour round trip and still dont have a fixed amp?

A couple of comments.

It's not a bad idea to replace the driver tubes when you replace the output tubes.

If it's like the SVT output section, there should be a phase inverter (PI) tube before the drivers. It's possible that the PI has a weak section and has lost a lot of gain/headroom.

I wish you luck with the EHX tubes. Several of the amps I have bought had EHX 6550 or KT88 in them and the failure rate has been extremely high. Several of the 6550s would not hold bias and ran away as they do not like like high plate voltage. If you can check the bias on this amp yourself, I would do so regularly to make sure it is not creeping up. It's very easy, but you need a volt meter.

I would check the bias and replace the PI before driving four hours. The repairs and tubes should have some sort of warranty...but maybe not long.

Are you sure there is not a problem with your preamp or cables?

JGR.. Yes.they replaced 3 driver tubes.
Soulman.. I agree but I bet they're gonna say "we can't take back used tubes" which they would now be... if they wanted to be defensive about it.
Wasnex... see above...and... I'm certain the preamp and cabling is fine as it's perfect with any other power section ... Plus JGR built it! Lol

It's a bit suspect that the symptoms are exactly the same as before the repair. I don't think you will get your money back, but the tubes and service should have a warranty. Unfortunately, I suspect there may be an intermittent problem that has nothing to do with tubes. So they will probably want more money to find the actual problem. It sounds like they installed they installed about $220 worth of tubes. What was the remaining $180 billed towards?

If there are any differences in the connections with your other gear, that should be explored. For example, when using TRS cables to go from balanced to unbalanced you can experience a loss in signal. I believe the SVT-300 has an unbalanced input. I don't know the specifics of your gear, so this may not be relevant. The speaker cables are also a possibility. Do you use the same speaker cables with your other amps?

Does amp the hum more than usual?

I would take it back tomorrow, they didn't fix it and charged you 400 bucks, insist they either fix it right or you want your money back. Tell them you are not a tech but know what it's supposed to sound like, you know your volume settings and that you checked your preamp into two other amps and there's nothing wrong with it and since they started the repair and soaked you for 400 bucks, they need to make it right.

Just a tube job with a bit of markup on tubes :(.

I can't see all of the text, but there seems to be a 30 day warranty statement at the bottom of the page.

I can't say I would be eager take the amp back to the same service center as IMHO they have provided poor service, failed to fix the problem, and overcharged you. But their is a contractual obligation to consider.

I don't usually worry too much about finding an authorized repair center unless something is under warranty or the device uses proprietary technology that no one else understands. The SVT-300 is IMHO not a complicated build...the tech was blowing smoke. If you have a reputable tech in your local area, I would give him/her your business next time.

Sorry brother...wish I could be more helpful:sorry:.

This is what the service warranty is for, either they missed something, or there is a problem with what you are driving it with. It would be helpful to bring your preamp and cabling with you and discuss this with the tech. IF it was a problem with something other than the amp, you might look like a real prick if you go in demanding that they fix something that is actually working fine. Right now, you don't know for sure what the problem might be.

(Yes, I see this sort of thing pretty often. Most techs are good about helping you sort this out)

Im the same way about authorized repair centers. Unfortunately, not only is this the closest Ampeg authorized repair place, its also just the closest repair tech. In the last 3 years all the local repair guys have retired. It seems that there are no new young guys doing this. argh.

I understand that. I have checked and double checked the cabling and preamp to eliminate those as issues. Ive taken all the same cables, same cabinet, and preamp and used them to drive another tube amp and the difference is abundantly clear.
I agree this what the service warranty is for, and Im certain they completely missed the problem. My question for you is what exactly should the service warranty reasonably provide? Yes, it should ultimately be fixed, but should I be on the hook for $300 in tubes I didnt need? I kinda feel like they should take the amp back, refund my $400 and they take the tubes back, and then I just pay for the ACTUAL repair needed?
Also, if you look at the repair ticket output test and IF that is correct, do you have any idea what may be the issue?

btw... in doing all my testing I realized that not only did they not fix it, but the issue has gotten worse. Im not blaming them for that as it was a slow degradation of volume and tone already. Initially the master would be on 3-3.5, then 5, then 7. Now its on 8 and it reaches the volume it used to, but the signal is a bit distorted and it can crackle when driven. Im a little incredulous that the tech said it sound tested fine and produced 300 watts. Maybe it is when the master is put at 8, but come on, has ANYONE ever run and SVT tube amp at 8 to get clean volume?? Ive never had one above noon (4-5) before it was seriously threatening the integrity of my speakers or very overdriven.

If that "tech" (or any tech worth their weight) says they can "work" on a tube amp, ask them if they have a tube tester. Ask to SEE said claimed tester. If they aren't willing to show you the tester, run. Run far away. And NEVER look back.

BTW, I DO have a tube tester (a Starkit 12-22, similar to the one in the photo)-

Needed it for tube hi-end audio stuff years ago. Still use it (my hi-fi preamp is a tube model).

Like I said, if a tech claims to work on or with tubes, make sure they have something like this around the lab!

PS- Oh, and by the way- not only am I a bass guitarist, but I'm an Electronics Engineering Technician who fixes and mods my own stuff too!
