Ampeg SGT-DI

I have said that I think this is probably the best do it all box, over all. But, If I could make a change, I’d have used an input gain like the pf heads instead of the sgt circuit. You could still have the svt/b15 option. It would have made the od useable for more types of basses and techniques, it just wouldn’t have the footswitch option.
I'd also put the xlr out on the top of the pedal and the power on the bottom corner, and figure out some way to stop/lessen the noise. Oh, and have the cab sim be less sensitive, so it could be used at a louder volume.

Oh, and put a smoother compressor in it. I'd use the same compressor from the pf heads.

Also, the pre amp is the only part of the whole unit that introduces noise. Max out the volume on the SGT, and it's silent. Go past half on the pre volume, and it buzzes. SGT on or off.

Also, I've learned that neither volume knob acts as a gain for the SGT. It's the same amount of drive no matter what you have set on the volumes. The only thing that will clean it up, is barely touching the strings.
.

Both points are a bit of a deal breaker for me I guess. Why is there noise? And a bit of a bummer that there is no way to set the amount of drive. So it’s basically on or off?

Well, you can turn the drive up, of course. There's just no way to have it sound like a clean svt, or b15. Just slightly driven, or massively driven. It's the drive channel. It's not really an amp simulation.

I don't know why the preamp is noisy. But, it's in the high end. It's also not noticeable once you turn the volume to noonish. Unless you have the ultra high on, or turn the treble past 3 o'clock.

Subscribed and enjoying this thread. I don't have the SGT yet but I'm getting a certain feeling from some of you that have it and were kind enough to share your thoughts about it. It seems to me that the initial excitement has died down a bit and now some of you love it and some are kind of "meh" about it. Am I wrong? I'm starting to feel that maybe the Origin Effects pedal, despite its much higher cost is a better deal? Would love to see a comparison video.

you can set the drive so it's barely distorting (i.e. as a very light OD), or even none at all. i have no idea of why someone would say that you can't.

that’s what I understood from JeezyMcNuggles posts.
Yeah, my bad I guess. You can adjust the drive. You just can't do what you can do with plugins on your DAW.

You can't emulate the amp you have in your bedroom. It's always gonna sound like you're pushing it. It's a drive effect.

That's what I meant.

But, it does sound great, and has great features. And, the pre amp sounds like my micro vr, mixed with my portaflex.

But it has some noise with the treble up, or the volume up. Volume past normal use volumes. Treble about where I like it.

I now have 3 practices and two services in at 3 different churches and happily report I love this preamp. It is doing what I had hoped to get out of the 10 or so other preamps I have. I'm using nearly all the features...EQ, SGT (SVT type), compressor and IR. I don't care for the SGT when solo'd but in the context of the band playing, it just works great. Ampeg/Yamaha got this one right.

Has anyone tried importing IRs from a third party vendor such as two-notes? I have some IRs that I am quite fond of on their platform. I would love to hear how they would sound with the SGT-DI.

Meanwhile, my SGT-DI will not arrive until Thursday. :/

How is the SGT-DI as a DI to a DAW?

It's good as a DI. It has many out put options, including a dry signal...which is awesome for recording.

So, I haven't swapped the IRs. But, what I want to do is export what's on there, and load them into my darkglass element.

I’m excited to see what else comes out now that Yamaha is running the show. I’d like to see a good combo with some of these features come out. I’m not a fan of the current rocket series combos.
The fully sweepable mids on this sgt are really good. I need to cut alittle at 659 and this pedal does it. The fixed 5 position mid doesn’t do it.

How do you get a dry signal? I thought everything came out the DI, including SGT & cab sim, if they're engaged.
There's a through out. It's made to go into a tuner. But, you can just run it into your interface as a dry signal. Then you can run the output into another amplifier, and a di out of that amp, pre eq, mic an actual speaker, and also have the cab sim on the DI of your SGT. In other words, with this box, you have access to 4 seperate tracks at the same time. One dry. One just the pre, no cab sim. One pre with a real mic'd cab. One full pedal + cab sim.

McGruber box.

SO after initially really liking the SGT, it's going back and I'm sticking with my VT Bass for now. Here's why:
  • DI output is cut by 20DB and no way to turn this off. I have to crank my board input almost all the way up to get a good level.
  • Compressor is after the SGT circuit. I suppose this work for some people, but it makes it where when you set the compressor for non-SGT, then want to use SGT for a boost, the compressor goes full blast and cuts the boost. I really just want the compressor at the input to smooth things out a bit.
  • The 3 gain stages are kinda a pain, and having to adjust the CAB gain on every sim is annoying. It just feels like too much. I would dread changing one of the gains during a gig and having to re-adjust the other ones.
  • I really don't love either SGT flavor and both seem to cut the highs too much. They are not as warm to my ears as the VT Bass, which I always have with a touch of drive.
I will say the pre-amp does sound a little better clean than the VT Bass to my ears, a bit more punch. At the end of the day the coms outweigh the pros for me.
