Possibly, it depends on where the noise is being generated.

I'm really interested in what your find with T/R vs. TRS with 1/4" cables. I don't remember any volume change with the SVP-CL, but my memory isn't what it used to be!

The volume was actually lower with the TRS lead.

Yup, understanding and using the science behind principals makes it possible to predict (accurately) the outcome.

In this case it was just experience as I tried the exact same test. IMO, a simple rack mount compressor inserted between the pre and power amp works best to raise gain plus you have compression if yo need it. It's already a rack mount set up so no big issue with convenience. The downside is being mindful of the compressor output control. As far as sound quality or S/N goes, my dbx 160 and Behringer MDX1400 work perfectly for this application and are both inexpensive and liquid on the used market.

When I owned the SVP-Pro, I used a Rane device in the rack to boost the line level to that needed by my QSC power amp.

Im going to try the Behringer MDX1600, and see how I get on. I tried the Behringer Ultragain Pro 2200 rack mount I found it distorted even with relatively low input into it, I was suprised as I own the Behringer Ultragain 100 and it performed much better than the 2200.
