Ampeg SVT-210AV info

Hi Everyone,

Have a few specific question about this cab.

I'll let you know my setup first, it's pretty simple: Fender basses (American std Jazz and American Ultra Precision), into a small pedalboard (tuner, comp, drive, HPF, Wah now and again but not always), this goes into an Ampeg V-4B (reissue, not one of the originals from the 70s), into a Barefaced Big Baby II Gen 3 at 8ohms. Between the V-4B and Barefaced cab I have my Two Notes Captor (8ohms version), with the cab attached to the Thru output of the Two Notes - This is for taking a DI signal that includes the power Amp section of the V-4B to the FOH. Sometimes I use a Two Notes C.A.B. M+ instead of the Captor, if I want a specific cabsim included to the FOH. Same principle applies in respect of the connections, with the Thru output of the C.A.B. M+ going into the Barefaced Cab.

Ok so my questions:

1. Was thinking of adding a 210AV to my set-up. If this theory was to work(?), would I be right in thinking that I connect the BBII and 210AV to the two 4ohm outputs on the back of the V-4B, each cab going into one of the outputs respectively? I know they are both rated at 8ohms, but i've got that one right I think?

2. Despite my Two Notes Captor being the 8ohm version, will it still be ok to use it with this configuration, with one of the speaker connections going into the Captor and the thru into one of the cabs? I ask this because i'd obviously be coming out of the 4ohm outlets on the back of the V-4B (if i'm correct). However, the load box function I don't think would be in use, as the cab is still in use via the thru, taking the load. Just the DI function is in use in this scenario, so I think i'm safe if i've got this right? If I was ever going to use the Captor as a load box, i'd just attach it directly to the 8ohm output. I assume the C.A.B. M+ can be used in the same function if I was using that to FOH between one of the cabs and the V-4B no problem as well?

3. In terms of physical arrangement of the amp and cabs, I was thinking of having the 210AV on its side on the bottom, the BBII on it's side (it has rubber feet on both the bottom and one of the sides, more cabs should do this) on top, with the V-4B on top of the BBII. Would the 210AV be ok with this sort of weight on top of it? The BBII is pretty lightweight (circa 13kg), with the V-4B weighing circa 18.5kg. Standing them side by side is a nice concept, but logistics permits this annoyingly. It would be the cabs on top of each other, either as I just mentioned, or with the 210AV on top of the BBII.

4. Can the 210AV be used by itself with the V-4B for smaller/studio sessions? I may not ever explore this situation, but I thought i'd ask. I know it can be used with a pair of 210AVs (again, I assume with each connected to one of the 4ohm outputs on the back of the V-4B?), this is something I may look into someday though.

Thanks guys, know that was a bit of a mouthful! Hopefully I made sense! Interested and of course always grateful to hear anyone's input!

Mike

1. Two 8 ohm loads in parallel is 4 ohms. You will use the two 4 ohm outputs. This is correct. From all of my prior researching, note that these two cabs sound quite different. So you may love this result…or not.

2. The load box is disconnected when using the speaker through, so it is fine to use with a 4ohm cab setup. See here: torpedo_captor:torpedo_captor_user_s_manual [User's manuals]

3. I’ve seen photos of people stacking a v-4b on top of two horizontal 210AVs, IIRC, but I would reach out to Ampeg directly for this one to be safe.

4. Yes the 210AV can handle the V-4b, just don’t turn up super loud or dime the bass EQ.

Thanks mate, I appreciate it

I hear what you’re saying re how different the cabs sound. I thought I’d give it a go, as I’d like an Ampeg cab but something portable. If it turns out I like the 210 but not in combination with the BBII, I could always sell on the BBII and grab another 210 or maybe even a 112av

Another question that's just occurred to me:

If one was to use three 8ohm cabs with the V-4B, would it be possible?

For example's sake, let's say a pair of 210AVs and a 112AV underneath. How would it be configured, or is it just not possible?

V4b will drive 2ohm load, so 3 x8ohm (in parallel) gives U 2.7, or close.. either way total load above 2ohm min.. all 3 boxs would get 33.3r % (even spread) of total "power"..
I'm not sure if U overall power would drop slightly ,. But I'm sure there are folks here that could answer that .
Nice, thanks

How would you go about connecting that all up? with there only being 2 speaker outs per load (except 80ohm) on the back of the amp?

There are in and out on each Ampeg box. U could go out of amp into 1st 210 then out of it to 2nd 210,then out to 112.
Note that given all boxs get their max wattage, SPL(volume) of each Ampeg model U mentioned would b even... except, by having the 112 on floor, 2x210 on-top ,the 112 would get an increase to vol because floor would act as a "horn" of types.. especially if stage floor a hard surface..my guess, it would work brilliant, killer !!

Thanks! Appreciate it!

Would it equally work if one of the 2ohm outlets from the amp went directly to the 1x12 and the other outlet into the 2x10, then out of the first 2x10 into the second one?

Especially the spl (volume) stuff.. most mixed boxs miss out overall because for instance, the 2 x210avs given 200watts each, would b 2x louder than the 112 given 300watts , IF all 3 were "floating" side by side in mid air..(as per factory specifications...at 1 watt , measured at 1 MTR away..) but because 112 is sitting on a flat hard surface ,good chance it spl would double..
But because 2 x210s

I had the spec sheet on the Ampeg range sitting next to me when I first read your "thread?" . I have just purchased a svt210av ,and Ampeg propaganda was with it..so I could work out what 2 x210 and 1 x112 would react given the 112 was on floor. I can't comment on different 1.12. U can try, can't hurt, but, I believe U would b lucky for it all to match up . IV tried my svt210av with a Hartke HiDrive 112 and the Hartke drowns out the 210 quite a bit. Unusable together.. I have a second 210 coming & a Darkglass micrtubes 500 V2 to drive both . The DG will also drive 2 ohms, so now I may add a svt112av for bigger gigs...

As I said in another post, using the same brand in head and cab will be “the sound” the company is known for. So by mixing so much would work of course but…. I’d start with the rig being of the same brand. That will be the basis of your sound. By adding you will flavour that sound in some way, maybe ???? I use a Tech 21 RPM pre-amp to help add to my GK 700, not take away the GK sound. I guess I’m not one to mix and match too much, but I have and still do. But I guess I’m saying sound wise, you have to have a base sound to flavour.
Hope this helps. Again, early am and 3rd espresso.
Edit:
Going back and reading some, I guess I don’t understand why to mix so many cabs ?? The adding to the two, 2 x 10’s, why ? Is it going to really “help” you achieve the sound you’re looking for ??
If so, then……. I bet you’ll be more than happy with the tube head with the two 2 x 10’s. With the amount of power now having to go to the 12 too, the ohm “issue” maybe. Sorry, I’m not one who would or consider adding that 12. Just me, so go for it. Hope it makes what you’re looking for. Remember, we are all looking for
“it” too.

Yes another concern I had is the big baby might dominate the 210av volume wise. I don’t have experience but word is Barefaced cabs are very loud for their size/weight.

It was just a hypothetical really. I’m in a situation where I can’t really have one big heavy cab (say a 4x10 or potentially even a 2x12). Logistically it’s just not really possible. However, two 210avs make it easier to transport around, even the option of using the one. Having a 1x12 as well, adds even more possibilities if it indeed is possible. I can mix and match depending on the situation and having the separate “smaller” cabs makes it logistically easier when moving (lots of flights of stairs) them. Hope that makes sense?

Having all three together could also make the rig taller and for larger gigs/practice, project more sound (in theory).
