Ampeg SVT 7 Pro - Cutting out ???

I'm not blaming anyone. I'm just saying that it's always a possibility that should be considered. In Sharky's case, it sounds unlikely that he was pushing it, but I've seen a couple cases on here with amps where people were clearly pushing them past that point, and I don't think considering that it may be operator error is a bad thing.

I have a 7 Pro with no problems.
Very happy, but still searching for the
perfect cab to match with it.
Sorry for all those that are getting skunked.
Mine is Rev. C.

look at alien alliance, Home | Alien Alliance Audio Systems. i use one with my 7 pro and just sounds like they were made for each other. i use the 4x10. they are kinda hard to check out, you gotta make a road trip, but well worth it.

Hmmm, even in Germany you hear a lot of SVT 7 Pro's lacking, and they do it at usual settings. No exotic settings, fitting cabs - but it happens. It happens to more people than the number of people, that are full satisfied.

I decidet NOT to get ma a SVT 7 Pro because of this high ammount of problems I readet about. I got me an used SVP-Pro and a poweramp with 2x 700w @ 4 Ohm, 2x 450 w @ 8 Ohm, and 1200 W @ 8 Ohm when used in bridged mode.

So I have my sound - no thought of lacking amps. And I push it hard, playing together with two high-gain guitarists and a drummer that "beat's it". OK, the power amp was about 400,-- USD, the used SVP-Pro with new tubes was about 400,-- USD too. So the whole rig did cost a bit more than a SVT 7-Pro. But I am happy - and this is why!

Thanks for all the interest in this thread everyone, I kinda forgot about it for a while haha. At the moment, I haven't had any more problems with the amp, plus I'm a bit short on cash at the moment, so I'm going to leave it for now. I did get in contact with the distributor here in Auckland, and he replied quickly, but I think for now (I know I'll get burned for this) I'll take the "wait and see" approach. If it happens again, I'm taking it straight in to the shop. It only happened at the first gig I used it, which to be fair, was one of the larger gigs we've played - it was a ballroom. The DJ after us had 5000 watts of power and a ridiculous amount of speakers to play with for the venue, so that just shows what we were "competing" with.

This is the first time I've dealt with Ampeg, and I'm by no means put off just because of what happened to me once - still love the sound of the SVT 7.

Thanks for all your input everyone. The post about the different limiters (opto vs clipping) was really helpful btw, so I'll be sure to look into it.

Cheers

:)
Glad it's going well now Sharkey.
I was initially intrigued as you said you were running it at 9 o'clock abouts iirc.
& since I've run mine at - gain 2 o'clock, master 9 - for a 3hr gig, I was thinking 'eeeek!'
As I've stated, I have run the gain high & master vol high for a while too, but didn't want to
1. cause an earthquake.
2. Blow my cab/ears, so I didn't do this for long.
FTR, mine's going great guns!

When I hear "shutting down briefly," maybe I'm crazy but I think of "trying to operate a piece of gear past its capabilities."

Maybe your crazy (I think several of us are, you should see the crazy list of gear I went through in 2010).

I ensure you I was using it properly, I haven't been playing long. However I can ensure you I know how to use an amp and purchased this one to have more head room than previously owned GB 6.0, Markbass F1, eden 300T, eden 550 and RH450, not to have more volume. also, I play with more of a bridge pickup tone not with heavy subs which can make some amps sweet a bit more at the same volume.

It wouldn't exactly shut down it would more cut out with all the normal LEDs on but no protect light. It only happened at 4ohms, with cabs I've played 6 other amps on without issue and at several (but fairly loud) volume levels including gig, rehearsal and funkn around with a drummer levels. This meant I could not trust it at gig or rehearsal volume safely as I could the 6 other advertised to be much less powerful amps. Also, the input signal was padded and the preamp gain was set just under an overdrive sound on my hardest note.

The problem would happen at different eq and compressor setting.

I can compare my gig and rehearsal volume levels to that of amps with half or less than half of the "claimed" output watts i.e. RH450 and Markbass F1. Also, there have been others that have similar complaints here on talkbass, this tells me it isn't a lemon issue but perhaps a design or a QC issue.

I wont argue that it has perhaps the best tone out of any amp I have owned but it simply can never again be trusted by me. Not after my experience and several others here on TB. If I was trying to push beyound the amps capabilities then the amp should be rated at 200W if an RH450 operates below 300W at the same perceived volume without breaking a sweet.

Edit: Genz Benz 9.0 gets just as loud as I ever pushed the SVT-7 and I have never had an issue with it, accept that it might be a little too light.

But its not a LOUD Tech Ampeg, apparently you have to baby the "SVT" 7 :D

I don't.
Mine's done about 12 gigs so far, no issues.
Last nite was one of my fave scenarios- PA for vocals & kick drum & touch of gtr only. Our drummer hits hard when he's allowed.
Had the 7 PRO running into 2 Mark Bass HR115 cabs. & sounded wonderful. Got a lot of compliments on my sound, there were a lot of local muso's there :)
Of course I wasn't pushing the amp (not many cases where I'd push a 1kw amp) but she sure sounded great!

I had the same problem when i would set the volume too high. After a while the amp would cut out about every 5 minutes during gigs. This was very frustrating. Luckily it was still under warranty and took it in to an authorized shop. The module had to be replaced and worked fine ever since. Im not happy with this issue and am currently selling it.

Makes sense...it's working good now, so time to sell it.

:D

You mean before it fails again? :p :hiding::D

Yeah, it is a trust issue. That amp had FANTASTIC tone but I don't care what they do to it or promise they make, as many times my SVT-7 cut out on me coupled with the reports of others it can never be trusted by me again.

If a 1KW amp with active pad on, flat EQ and properly set up 4ohm rig cuts out more than once at rehearsal & gig levels ....enough, this garbage is getting returned.

If they address the issue publicly and come out with an updated model I'd potentially give it a shot.
