Ampeg svt 810e classic or 810 heritage?

I'd swoop down on that used Heritage SVT-CL in a second, but I just paid for an all out beach vacation to San Diego along with tickets to a Cardinals vs Padres game for my kids on my eldest daughter's 13th birthday, --she's a rabid Redbirds fan.

So my Heritage SVT stack will have to wait just a little bit longer. And the wait is killing me!

I know I've been picking your brain for quite some time about your Heritage Stack, Jimmy! You've made me lean towards the Heritage SVT-CL again!

I'm not hurting for amp gear by any means, the Heritage Stack is a late 50th Birthday gift to myself, and I intend it to be the Masterpiece of my Jam Room.

So I may as well go all out and buy the best that Ampeg has to offer!

Well, as a guy who has owned both (currently own the Heritage) I can say that (for me) it would be the Heritage hands down.

Build is MUCH better, speakers are MUCH better, Tolex is MUCH better, Grill Cloth is MUCH better, Sound/Tone is "better"......

It is still an Ampeg 8X10.

That being said - the sheer value of having one of the "first year" cabinets was sort of my "selling point", if you will. I grabbed #44 and there is another talkbass member (sorry, dude! Can't remember who!) who has #42.

I like the cab so much in fact that I went ahead and bought a Heritage CL to "round out" the pair...they sound like a million bucks!!

Anyway....IMO!!! And YMMV!!!

Good luck with your decision!!
Hi mate,
Are they the same size. I just bought the Heritage today and it's on it's way to me. I'd like to buy a padded cover and can only find classic covers online. I was wondering if you know if they would fit the Heritage cab?
Cheers
Mick

What do you mean by Speakers and Tone are "better"? Can you elaborate on this? cheers.

AFAIK they both have exactly the same specs. They both are rated for 800W and have a usable frequency response of 40hz-5khz. They are voiced a bit different though, which is due to different drivers. Some people prefer the Heritage and some prefer the Classic. So some will claim the Heritage is better and some will claim the Classic is better. Since this is a subjective assessment, they are both correct.

I recently ran into a screamin' deal on a decent-condition 810e, non-Heritage, on my local CL. I bought it, but not before gathering a little information. What I learned is that around the time it was built (2006 is my hazy recollection) Ampeg switched from OSB to plywood, and also from using dark-sounding drivers to a brighter, more middy-sounding driver. The unit I bought has the plywood, and there is no way these drivers are the dark-sounding type. So....I feel like I scored. The Heritage would also be plywood but I am unsure whether the Heritage has the same drivers as this 810e or not. Bottom line: I wonder how different my 810e is compared to the Heritage. I wonder if the biggest difference is the grille cloth.

Nope, different drivers altogether, but still, a screamin' deal is a screamin' deal!

Hi just bought a new Heritage 8X10 and a new SVT VR after comparing it to a CL hooked up to 8X10E
and swopping the combinations around
there are subtle changes I have found the Heritage is more focused /puncher wind in some dirt from the gain on it blows your head off
this is more prominent when bridging the channels on the vr head
like all the Ampeg gear that distinct Amp sound is still there what ever you decide
I am going to use the Heritage cab with the SVTVR head might get some Heritage cloth to cover the the amp grill to match the cab yes I know its a bit OTT but it will look good

I'd love to A/B test my 810 Classic with a Heritage.

Looking for a fridge here.
Any thoughts on a new Heritage 810 vs a used mid 90s USA 810e?

People seems to like both…if you could choose, which one would it be?
Heritage. Best speakers ever, lighter, real wood and not OSB. That said, the 90s cabs do sound quite good…but more like the current CL 810e.

I concur! Best Ampeg cab. I'd say it's just as good as the straight backs I had. Sold one of those to fund the Heritage 810 since it has way more power handling and I sometimes supply my 810 as a backline for other bands we play with. Didn't feel like worrying too much about the 240 watt straight back. No regrets!

What ever one you get… ( I have a classic with both grill cloth colours), if you haven’t owned or moved one gig to gig and all in between, if nothing else…. At least buy a cover. No matter how careful a person you are the tolex or…. Will tear even just looking from the cabinet to the truck.
I’m not the most careful person, I don’t beat up my gear but to me it’s a tool. Sound wise, at rock volumes I don’t know if you can tell one from the other on stage.
I can’t, standing in front of one ( or two ) for years my hearing is ok, but not good in the tonal part.

Can you school me a bit on these inputs…

Either jack or speakon for the whole 8x10, right? How does that splitting work?

There is a switching contact in the top 1/4" jack. If no plug is inserted in this jack, the cab functions as an 810. The bottom four jacks are wired in parallel, so you can use any of them as either an input or a thru.

When you insert a plug in the top jack it breaks the cab down into top and bottom sections. The top jack connects to the top 410 and the bottom four jacks connect to the bottom 410. All four bottom jacks are still connected in parallel and can be used as either an input or thru.

The idea is you can use separate amps to drive each section of the cab. One amp connects to the top jack and powers the top 410. The other amp connect to one of the bottom four jacks and powers the bottom 410. You can also daisy chain a second cab off the bottom 410 by using a second jack as a thru.

:hyper:Warning:hyper::

Do not connect two amps to the bottom four jacks!
Doing so is likely to let out the magic smoke.

I would also avoid splitting the cab using any amps with a differential output. This includes class-D amps and amps set up to operate in bridge mode.

Why is the differential output a problem? AFAIK the 810 does not break the ground connection between the top and bottom 410s.

Tube amps and old led sleds are usually single-ended (unless bridged). So, the negative terminal of the amps speaker out is actually ground and this is not a problem.

In contrast, amps that operate in bridge mode have what is called a differential output. They produce a signal on both the positive and negative terminals of the speaker out.

If you attempt to split the cab with amps that have differential outputs, it will short the negative terminals of both amps together, which can result in damage.
