Ampeg SVT-8x10e "the best"???

Where / how did Bass Player Mag "Tone + Technology" pick the Ampeg SVT 810e as the "best" cab? Was this purely speculative or was there some qaulitative analysis behind this.

I won't comment on the Markbass LMII (or was it the LM II) as the best amp:hiding:

Considering it revolutionized the bass amplification industry 40 years ago and still is the most popular cab on pro stages today, I could see where they say that. Is it based on sound acoustic principles? Not really. But it has a great sound...even the new ones that I don't like still sound pretty good.

Also, the article you refer to was a "reader poll" result. The Ampeg speaker may not be the "best" but it sure is the most popular!

"Polls" like that are popularity contests. Two years from now when all the flavor of the month opinions have changed a whole new bunch of "winners" will emerge. Ya know, kind of like the Grammys!

Such polls are pretty useless as a way to evaluate anything. Except perhaps the marketing skills of the winners! The "best" speaker or amplifier etc. is what works for you.

Yo AMPEG... Ima let you finish, but Peavey has one of the best cabinets of all time!

Nice play!! :)

"Best" is definitely different than "favorite", although the latter is often used/perceived/marketed as the former. What qualifies as "best" is also usually based on a particular set of criteria which may, or may not, apply to your situation.

For example...
Which bass amp makes the best boat anchor - SVT or LMII? The answer a majority of people will give is "SVT", in this case. Now, a marketing department takes that, pulls out just the parts they want, and spins it into "SVT is the best bass amp".

Is it the best bass amp for you? Maybe, maybe not.
