"Connect your amp as usual, then connect a 1⁄4" to 1⁄4" speaker cable from the second (parallel) speaker cabinet jack to theJDI. Because of the high impedance and low draw from the JDI, the amp will only see the speaker cabinet, so you do not have to change the amplifier's impedance setting. Depressing BOTH the -15dB PAD switch and the SPEAKER switch inserts a special circuit that will protect the JDI from overload and allow the parallel speaker connection to be made safely.Depressing the SPEAKER switch also introduces a band-pass filter circuit that rolls off high and low frequencies to simulate the performance of a typical 12" speaker cabinet."

You are right of course...the information is there, but honestly the diagram and directions could a lot clearer.

If you read through the entire manual it's hard to not get the idea that the document has internal conflicts on this matter. The reference you cited is the one that says you must engage both the 15dB pad and the speaker emulation switch to activate the special input protection circuit. But other references in the manual and smart sheets infer it's only necessary to activate the speaker emulation circuit. Also what if you don't want a filtered response, is engaging the 15dB pad sufficient to protect the JDI from damage? As I showed earlier, engaging the 15dB pad should set the overload at about 600W....but maybe I am missing something here. This is why I suggested contacting Radial for clarification. Please don't take my word for it. The JDI is a nice DI and I would hate for someone to damage it with too much voltage.

Unscientific observations, using only my ears:

1. The 'Speaker' button doesn't do anything unless the '15db Pad' is also activated.
2. The level does not drop by -30db when the 'Speaker' button is depressed.
3. The cabinet simulator is clearly audible with both buttons depressed.

That's not what I would expect with the JDI's block diagram shown in the manual, but I will take your word for it. At this point, I am thoroughly convinced that Radial's intent is for users to engage both the Speaker and Pad button when the JDI is used at speaker level. I have added clarifying comments to some of my earlier posts in the thread.

That should be easy then since all the jacks are simply connected in parallel .
