Ampeg SVT CL

What are the pros and cons to "diming" the master volume and using the gain as the volume control? I've seen it mentioned on here a few times but don't quite understand the concept. I've been running my amp this way for the last couple of months and it does sound killer. Just wondering if this affects tube life or anything. Thanks dudes!

Pros: Sounds much more like a vintage SVT without separate gain and master, less compressed and cleaner, although I think running it up to about 3:00 is enough to accomplish that.

Cons: Really have to crank it hard if you want distortion, whereas you can get preamp distortion at any volume. It doesn't sound as good to me as power tube distortion, but it's still pretty cool, if a little buzzy.
