Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

Aw, you guys make me feel lame for using my little BA110 practice amp on my gig tonight. OTOH, I was in the car and on the road 3 minutes after the gig. I try to be a good tube snob but that aspect really does appeal to me. Oh well, at least I can use the "it's in the shop excuse" for not using my SVT.

.
How do you not have a pre/post button on yours? mine has one right in the front right under the ultra low bitton on the left. Later models had them above the graphic eq button on the right. I've never seen one that didnt have the button.

Umm...I said right in my post that it has one. ;)

The seller and I were discussing where the DI signal comes from. I assume that it comes straight off the preamp, since it has a pre/post button, rather than off of the OT like a 400 series Mesa. Am I correct?

Thats what I thought you guys would say, for now I'm keeping it. Thanks for talking me down off that ledge. Im not a small guy (6'4" 280lbs fit & I work construction) I fell from a ladder about 12 feet up carying a 115lb of copper cable off a roof. I hurt myself & was out for a few days. Its been a month now & my body is still in pain & my shoulders are shot. Before that I was fine. Anyway I filled the preamp 12AX7 slots with Gold Lions this morning & have two NOS 1959 Amperex 12AU7s in the driver spots soon to be replaced by Gold Lions. I must say they are the best new tube on the market I've ever used & Ive got a box of every new 12AX7 & 12AU7 under the sun. Theres a reason they cost so much ($30 each) because they sound so dang good. Way 3D with a wide smooth up front midrange They have a natural compression that takes the edge off those heavy hit notes so well I took my compressor out of my pedal chain. The best thing about them & this was where I was sold was the growl... That thick low mid throaty string slide growl where you can feel the beast on your chest type of growl. That was the kicker. I'm gona end up dropping in some Gold Lion KT88s soon & see how much sexyness I can get out of her.

Well, now I can see why it was such a chore hauling that baby around. Hope you're doing better.
Haven't heard of Gold Lion but I'm intrigued now. Love the KT88's in mine. More headroom before they break up. A must when playing with a super loud guitarist and a gorilla of a drummer.

I have the same situation except I deal with two super loud midrange loving guitarist & a crazy loud drummer. New sensor aka svetlana makes the Gold Lions. google gold lion 12AX7 & wala.

Just jammed on mine and really dig it. I'll be using it on its first gig this Saturday. I've only played it through one of my Aggies, which are relatively scooped sounding, and I'm impressed with the punchy mid-range this amp delivers. I'll be using it with one my Bergie AE410s on Saturday.

I've always used the graphic EQ on my 400+. I've noticed that, even when set "flat," the graphic on the SVT-II adds this very aggressive high mid-range that sounds glorious. It would have sounded pants in my last rock band, but I think it may be a little too much in my current country project. I'll probably just play with the parametric, but I'll look forward to that situation when I can flip on the graphic and rip some heads off.

I was GASing for a new amp and was checking out some of the new GK stuff. Its pretty nice and super light. Then I came home and plugged into my SVTII.

Said to myself, "oh yeah, thats what a bass sounds like".

;)
I know the feeling. Before my SVTII, I was playing a 4 Pro through a Carvin BRX10.4. That head was stolen and eventually recovered. Though it was an adequate amp, I didn't realize true tone until I got the SVTII. I first plugged in with everything flat, hit a few notes and a huge grin came upon my face. Total tube goodness!

Ok people I just can't keep moving my much loved amp around. She is on sale in the classifieds. My busted up old man body cant keep moving her around between two bands & my lazy band mates are no help so I must give Gods Voice to someone else.

Off to Mr. Justin Meldal Johnsen with you... Dont cry, dont you dare cry! :crying:

does anyone know if these: Invalid Link Removed

fit the D pots on here or do i have to go with the standard knobs? Mine have started to crack and fall off.

Just to clariy: those knobs are not universal knobs, but they are stock replacements for Ampeg's "Universal" amps that they made in the '60's. Ampeg called them universal because they were designed to work with guitar, bass or accordion. I would just get the period correct black plastic ones. They are much cheaper
