Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

It was sold as working, it was listed on both GC and Musicians Friend sites. I will open it up later today or tomorrow and see before plugging it in. It wasn't packed very well when I got it, just a bunch of bubble wrap in a cardboard box, so hopefully it wasn't damaged. Either way, I will be taking it in over the next few months to have it assessed by a tech for whatever it will need, I did notice dust inside the graphic eq, so at the very least it might need a good cleaning. Thanks for the reply!!

You can get really good deals from GC used, but their descriptions are not always accurate. I have bought quite a bit of used gear from them. Some needed nothing, some needed minor repairs, and some was beyond economical repair.

Confirming the operational status of the amp should be done soon enough to allow you to take advantage of their generous return policy. Even better if you have a local GC, so you can avoid the hassle of shipping.

Shipping from GC Used is often surprisingly cheap, but how well they pack gear varies wildly. I bought a used 1960BX from them and it was packed in a huge box filled with bubble wrap and shipped freight on a pallet. An 18 wheeler backed up to my drive way and lowered the pallet with a lift gate. Another purchase involved a near mint 1987 Ampeg SVT. This was packed in a flimsy box with really fragile bubble wrap. The amp arrived face down with pretty much all of the bubbles popped. The mid control knob was snapped off and the front panel was marred a bit. The local GC tried to get me to do a return. But I talked them into fixing the damage. I had to tell them where to buy the part though. A week after getting the amp back, a filter cap failed in the power supply. I did a full cap job myself as I knew they would insist on a return.

Excellent, I will take it to the nearest GC this week just to be safe. That way I can also plug it into a cab if it all checks out. I sold my amp and cab a few years back, been using IEMs and a Tech21 VT for the last few years, really missed having an actual rig. Even if this SVT2 does end up needing work, it'll be worth it to me, the one amp I truly regretted selling.

With the one I got in the early 2000's, I ended up replacing all the tubes despite how mint/clean as it was. This one looks to be a bit rougher, and had a mini switch added between normal and bright inputs, and it will need a rack case at some point(my old one had a wooden Ampeg case, hoping I can find another). Can't wait to crank this up!

oof. had that exact scenario having my '93 shipped from a GC in Seattle to my home in Houston. it was shocking how badly it was packed and equally as shocking that it did not then, and has not in the almost 15 years of me owning it and playing it hard, needed a lick of work.

The 12ax7 must've came loose during shipping, so I dusted around everything and put it back in. Would there be any harm in removing the front panel to clean dust off the graphic eq, I was thinking a q tip would work well(I can see layer on the sliders from the outside) I still plan on bringing it in and having a pro look, but whatever I can do myself safely...

If your old head case looked like mine in this pic:

They were called the: Ampeg SVT-RC4 headcase, and using that designation might be of help in your search.

PS:
Ampeg also made a different looking Headcase for the SVT2 Pro amps, I cant remember what part# (or designation name) they were called, but be aware they were available in your choice of 3-rack space version, and 4-rack space versions... So just make sure you get the 4-space version if you end up buying one of those.

Thank you! My old one had that exact case, though I'm not opposed to a newer version so long as it fits(I almost like the later versions better). It'll probably be a few months or more before I get a case of some sort.

I decided not to attempt cleaning the graphic eq, rather I put the top back on and will let someone qualified clean it when they do a checkup on it. Never knew a tube could just come loose during shipping? Glad I didn't just go and plug it in with a missing tube! i look forward to cranking this up, if I can't buy back my old fEARful 121261 from a friend I sold it to, I might just build another.

I found this cab somewhat local to me, and very affordable. I read a few threads on this, and it seems this cab was sorta made for these amps, am I wrong thinking this? Being from the same era and all

Bummer, but turns out that Ampeg 215 isn't local to me. It's Duluth *Georgia*(I'm in MN), and local pickup only. I got excited without reading the full address. Oh well, probably for the best, can't really afford anything right now anyways. I also read a few threads on these and these make for a *very* heavy combo with an SVT2 installed, though they sound great by all accounts.

If I can't buy back my old fEARful 12/12/6/1 from a friend, I might just make a new one, or even matching 15/6/1's, I've really come to love hearing what amps truly sound like with minimal cab coloration(playing a GK 800RB thru a fEARful was an eye/ear opener), especially since most sound techs will want a direct signal(I've only had a cab mic'd once in live playing, that was 1st Ave around 20 years ago), so I want to hear what FOH hears.

I usually play my SVTs through a pair of GB1288T-UQ and they sound great!

These cabs are full-range and relatively HiFi...a bit on the warm side.

A 1515/66 would be cool.

Just fired mine up for the first time in years to make sure it's in working order. It sure is. Micro heads are fantastic but this reminded me what I've been missing. Sadly my mid control knob got brittle and broke on the pot shaft so I'm down a knob. Anyone have a good tip for a replacement control knob or a substitute set? Full compass has em for less than a buck but not in stock and I'm not paying the ridiculous price eBay is selling these cheapo plastic knobs for. Looking at some guyker safakesky aluminum knobs on Amazon that are reminiscent of the knobs on my svp-cl. Any thoughts?

Looked at Mouser website yet? Or Fliptops.net?

Yeah been using my SVT Classic lately at rehearsals & as great as some modern amps sound , NOTHING sounds like 300 watts of all tubes !!
