Ampeg SVT-II & Trace Elliot cabs STUFF ARRIVED!

Guess I'm wrong. I restored a 210 a while back; I swear I remember discussing whether my unmarked drivers were Fane or Celestion. If they only used Celestion 10's, then that likely makes it a more straightforward replacement.

I guess that could depend on the vintage of your 2x10.

I don't even remember seeing a 2x10 before the mark V range, in 1987.

It's possible that the earliest Soundwaves (if I remember correctly???) prototype Trace Elliot, and mark 1-2 Trace Elliot might have used another brand 10" driver.

Every mark III, mark IV, mark V, and Series 6 cabinet I've ever encountered, used those Celestion 10" drivers.

When the SMX range launched in 1993, Trace up rated the drivers to the 80 Watt, Kevlar impregnated variety, with the small, Trace Elliot branded dust caps.

Gibson continued using Celstions (although I have to admit, I lost track of the Trace Brand in the early 2000's, so it's possible Gibson switched brand right at the end), and certainly when Peavy came to the rescue, they stuck with Celestions.

It remains to be seen where Peavy take the brand next ; I'd imagine that once they've revitalised things with the ELF, they will look at a more powerful ELF if the demand is there, and if they're getting interest from bigger artis, then reintroduce big backline items.

At that point, it will be interesting to see if they stick with Celestions, or go with the drivers they're using in the ELF 1x10 cab.

Those are Series 6 cabs, circa 1990.
i'm not sure about that...they look just like my Trace speakers from 1985..I had one new cab....and one used that had a blown driver...returned that one
No tweeter was necessary...and every band was using them...but often with the Trace recommended 15 underneath

mine was fine as a standalone...funk/rock/reggae...with my AH250 on top

They're definitely Series 6 :

1985 was mark IV era (grill was black steel mesh, with a black wooden frame, and with a Trace badge bolted on).

1987 was mark V (grill was black steel mesh, right up to the edge, with a Trace badge bolted on).

1989/1990 was Series 6 (grill was the pressed steel plate, with a Trace badge bolted on, as shown in OP's photo).

1993 was SMX (grill is closer in design to Series 6 era, with printed Trace logo, but tuning ports extend through the front of the grill, facilitating variable baffle. Cabinets are taller, and shallower. 4x10 has HF horn. Drivers have small dust caps, with TE branding).

1998<~> V-type (this is when, in the UK at least, some cabinets start appearing with rat-fur instead of Tolex - thanks a bunch Gibson).

Matched sets of three tubes. I don't think it's feasible to run just three but I am no tech.

@JimmyM must be busy catching up on sleep.
Even better...helping my mother in law get moved out of our house and into her new place!

Ya, matched group of three, each triangle is a set. But I don't know if it's a good idea to test an SVT this way. I've never done it or been inclined to.

I know people actually use EL34 or 6l6 amps with only two tubes instead of four or 6 when they want to hear crackle but not go deaf :D Which is also great for testing your pairs of tubes ! I just don't know whether it's safe to do so on this set.

Not safe.

The tubes are not paired, they are triplets.

I have never heard of anyone running a SVT on a single triplet. JimmyM doesn't think it's a good idea and he's played more SVT's than you've had hot dinners. BassmanPaul knows a thing or three about tube amps and he's got nothing for you.

I'd venture it's a lost cause. Take it to a tech.

Well, I'll have a listen when it arrives. I'm thinking I'll try it with an external solid state pre-amp driving the end-stage only. That should give me an idea about the condition of the endstage tubes. If it sounds good, I'll leave'em be for the time being and start snooping around the pre-tubes. If it's not good, well, I might as well bite the bullet and just get a set of new tubes and take it to a tech. Thanks for the info on this :)

Back to the speaker issue. If a speaker starts farting out at low volume levels, what is the exact cause of that? Burnt coil, or can it be something else like a damaged cone? Because I've a friend who does speaker repair, and I'm thinking if it's just a blown coil, I might ask him to copy the existing coil and replace only that in the speaker. If it's a copy of the original, I'm sure it'll sound the same.

Gah...i thought I gave that impression....No...i was just starting to learn ...and saw them live...loved the sound of his sabre and Trace Elliot stack...stood right in front...sounded amazing

It sounds great in that video.

I couldn't tell, watching it on my phone (with good headphones), which pick-up configuration he's using - but it's not typical of the Stingray zing through a Trace - so I'm guessing it's bridge pick-up & neck pick-up combined (I can't remember exactly what the different modes were on the early switched Sabres, but they're different to the modes on the later models with the blade selector).

It's definitely not just the neck pick-up soloed, and doesn't sound like he's using the Trace pre-shape either, though again, on my phone, I couldn't see how the graphic EQ was set.

That Fane 15" sounds awesome - although I can't see what mic is being used, and obviously have no idea what the signal path was for the broadcast.

Anyway, I thought it was a funny coincidence, if you had been the bassist; as the video for Love & Pride was on some TOTP rerun a couple of days ago, and I was lusting after that Sabre.

It could be that the cone is separating from the coil, or it could be there is a rip in the surround.

If it's the latter (which seems the less likely), you could make a repair, but it's far from ideal, and will continue to fail.

I'm certainly no expert in this regard, but it's probably not a practical repair situation.

Replacement seems like the only real option ( be that like for like, or the closest to it).

It's all over for all the moving parts when the coil fails. Nobody separates the glued assembly to replace one part. So it's always called a recone.
:D
Clearly you have not seen the miracle repairs small speaker shops can do around here lol
You can actually buy pretty much any part of a cone assembly separately in more-or-less generic/"standard" sizes. Whether that's a blessing or a curse, that depends on who you ask and who does the work. With the right solvents you can actually save original cones even if the coil is crispy, as long as the cone itself is not damaged. Thing is, most repair places will -not- custom-wind an identical coil for you, just slap in a generic cone assy because it's faster and easier. That is when you wind up with a speaker that has nothing to do with the original as far as sound goes, and if the coil is not correctly sized, it will kill the speaker in it's original application pretty quick.
On the other hand if you know someone who can and most importantly will custom wind an identical coil for you, then game on.

So... sh*t just got real today when my buddy arrived from Berlin :D

There is also good news, and bad news. But mostly good.
The good: The head sounds great, I don't think I'll need to do any tube swapping just yet. No background noise at all, sound is crystal clear. I think the seller only thought the tubes would be a problem because of the busted cab or somesuch. Knock on wood it'll pass first rehearsal without a hitch, then I can say it's perfect :)
The bad: One of the enclosures has in fact all the speakers fried.
The weird: The speakers in the trace cab seem to be the least mentioned ones around. See the pic. They're definitely original, even the soldering was factory done, and the baskets look like celestions, but there is no stamping in the basket at all.

So... does anyone have an idea for 10" speakers that would work okay, or pereferrably even better than the originals in these cabs?

Bulgarian speakers might be very cool.
