Greetings from the North,

Back in ancient times I had a 1st series Ampeg SVT head. It was and still is my all time favourite. My memory might be kinda sketchy but I think mine had 6460's, as opposed to the mid 70's Blue Lines 6550's, for power tubes and it had a little more grunt too. It's been a little while now since Ampeg put out the 'new' SVT VR and was wondering how the owners are liking them and if anyone has compared them to the old ones from the early & mid 70's.

Although they're a bit too heavy for me now this ole Peg vet would like to know.

I have a 70's vintage one, a VR and a CL.

I like the VR very, very much. I do the 70's and the CL too....even though the CL has "fallen out of favor" here...it seems...I still like it.

Oddly enough, I can replicate the VR by using the CL and putting an MXR eq in the effects loop.

I remember reading a review on-line that was from one of bass magazines (Bass Player I think...), and that guy did an a/b comparison with a SVT from 1970. He said he found almost no differnence between the two.

I'm hoping that holds true with the Viet Nam ones cause mine should be in any day now.

I did an A/B test with my VR and an original 70's SVT and they are freakin' close let me tell you. I wish I had more time to play trough them though. I hope the asian versions of the VR are cool enough, like this american made VR.

On the other hand, the CL it's a very versatile beast, but you have to know how to take that versatility out, it's kind of tricky, but it has a lovely sound.
