Ampeg v4b 2x15 cab

I'd love to have an 8x10 with this head. I lurk around craigslist often lookin for sexy deals.
Thats insane, one of the major offputs for the 8x10 was the size and weight but the v4b cab is heavier???
If i coulda snagged it for 150 on here it would be justified, but I think I am good with the 2 15s I got now.
When I went to the sellers house for the v4b the guy had it hooked up to the v4 guitar 4x12 cab. He mighta put bass speakers in it I didnt ask him but it sounded way cool through bass.

Well got the beast out of the Yukon and assessing what I need to get, to getting in serviceable condition

One item that needs to be repaired is the wheels, on these older cabinets they used a bolt as an axle ... ordered some wheels from Apollo Casters,

Seems someone did a Speakon conversion, I'll keep it, but I'll screw it in place

The grill was an interesting take, they used a fine mesh cloth and applied fiberglass insect screen on to of it , but the all important, old style Ampeg logo/badge is there ... the attaching pads are intact also they just covered the top & bottom corners and cut around the middle ones,

The cab is real structurally sound ,,, may be new "Tolex" or "Dura Liner" ... haven't decided yet

Well went to the local hardware store and picked up a 5/32 "clutch" bit

Opened the driver compartment and here is what is in it

Once I get things sorted out, I'll try these speakers, but I will load the 3015's I have and see how those sound, been thinking of adding a 6"-8" mid driver, like the one in the Berg NV215 that I have, .... I had one of these cabinets decades ago and there is something about how the 15's sound in a folded horn ...... but one step at a time .... need to pull the other/bottom cover off

Ok ... removed the lower acces cover and the same type of speaker is in there,and again the wire job is something to be desired

The sealing compound is dried out ... gotta replace that, gonna use some foam weatherstripping

Got to thinking about the speakers that are currently in this cabinet, there is no identifying numbers on the drivers and after looking at the US Speaker site I'm guessing these are Delta 15A's ... gonna pull a driver out and see what the cone structure looks like
Delta 15a's are excellent speakers. I have them in my B-15 repro cabs. That's an older label, so I don't know if they've changed the whole speaker or just the label, but they are quite good as far as I'm concerned.
Well .. pulled the speakers out and they have ribbing on the cones

Hooked up my multi meter and ohmed this driver and look what I found out

Seems to be a 16 ohm driver ... I am assuming the other one is the same ... with both wired in parallel,, I have a 8 ohm cabinet ... this is kinda a good thing, as I planed on using one of my old Traynor YBA-3's and those amps are 8 ohm heads ...all tho with those big Hammond transformers you can run them all day at 4 ohms, the output jacks are wired in series .... anyways looking at unobstructed view of the driver there is no ID markings as to the model

Looking at the wires ends, the stripped ends are kinda long, so I'm guessing there were speakers that had push button posts ... the Altecs had them and the EV 15L had them also ... my guess is someone made off with the vintage stuff and installed the Eminence drivers, in my research at one time, the early 15 drivers were the stamped steel frame CTS drivers, with the square magnets, Ampeg, I believe quickly went to the higher grade speakers ... but anyways, this is now ... and your right Jimmy, the Delta 15's are a nice sounding speakers ... more to follow

I did find some markings on these speakers ...have no idea what they mean though

Well had to get some bolts, as some were missing, 1 1/4" long by 1/4-20 SAE cap screws ...didn't have any spade connectors, so I soldered them on

Ohmed out the cab and it read 6 ohms on the Fluke multi-meter ... hooked up to the ToneHammer 500 ... that cab got pretty loud

I saw this same cab on Houston Craigslist, and was very much tempted by it because I just acquired a 1974 V4B head. However, seeing as I wouldn't even be able to transport it in my Toyota Tundra (too deep to laydown with my bedcover) I just couldn't justify it. It's great that you are fixing it up. If you ever want to hear it with my V4B, PM and we'll get together.
I finally got around to installing the new replacement wheels ... the new wheels have a 250# load capacity

i decided to change out the Speakon jack, as it was the the NL2MP series, and it will not mate with the NL4MP series plugs that I currently use

I installed a pair of Penn/Elcom cabinet feet ... the cabinet back wheels are installed, so 3/4" feet are needed to make the cabinet level

I'm kinda liking the ragged out look of this cabinet, may just keep it this way ... really haven't given much thought on whether to retolex it ... been looking for a pair of 421A's

You are right about it being structurally sound. It looks to be in very good condition, despite being well used. This cab is going to clean up well.

Found a V-4B cab and since there aren't many info in the web for the specific cab, I am asking here for your opinion.
In this topic is said that the cab came with either Altec's or EV's. I am uploading some pics from the speakers because I can't tell for sure if they are the originals or aftermarket. Unfurtunately I can't try the cab before I buy it so any feedback would be much appreciated.
