Ampeg VS Gallien Krueger

I have to choose between:

Ampeg SVP Pro + Crown XLS 402
or
Gallien Krueger 1001Rb Mark2

I can get both for the same price..

The amp will drive Markbass Standard 410HF
I play Ernie Ball MM Stingray 5 in a hard rock band,..

What would You choose and Why?

ebmm sr5? Get the GK. They are THE amps to use with ernie balls. Especially for hard rock.

besides personal preference, the GK weighs a little over half of the ampeg + crown me thinks.

The great GK growl or the tube drive goodness from Ampeg..

"Disintegration" album, by the Cure(esp. the title song) has plenty of Stingray through an SVT - great sound!


My GK 800RB needed a tube preamp to get it up to par for me..not a bad amp either though...

For my personal opinion, I love GK tone, very versatile, punchy, yet still a GK stamp on it (the tone). I do not like the Ampeg tone, not as versatile, dirty kind of growl. Also, the XLS series of amps from crown are not their best series. I havent heard them yet on a bass rig, but in a small PA package, they seem to miss low punch. The microtech-macrotech series, the PSA2 (My favorite), and powerbase sound better to my ears.

For what it's worth, I used to run a SansAmp RBI into a QSC PLX1602 into an Avatar B410. I'm now running a GK 1001RB-II into a Schroeder 1210 and wouldn't dream of going back to my old setup.

I like the Ampeg better, but I don't think there's a wrong choice there. Pick which one sounds best to you.

I've never seen anyone not have some kind of pre-amp setup if they used an Ampeg; conversely, I've never seen anyone ever use anything but their Gallien Kruger, not even Duff.

also ampeg does have alot of white noise... thats another thing tot hink about.

I like ampeg, but then again I also like the earthy tone of a Fender Jazz & don't get excited by anything in the Active tone side of Bass.

For that reason alone, I'd suggest the GK may be your puppy.

I have an Ampeg SVT 4 Pro and a GK 1001RBII. When I first got the GK (about 1 month ago) I ran back and forth between the 2 trying to decide which one i like better.

I still have not come to an ultimate decision on which i prefer and i intend on keeping both amps.

To me the Ampeg has a darker, thicker and more rounded sounding tone, not too harsh but dirty when asked to be. The GK gets more bite and punch and has more of an edge to it, I can get a brighter tone with the GK and it has more clarity. I can get them both gritty and dirty (i play a G&L L2K so that may be why!). This may sound strange but if i had to put an image with each amp to describe its sound (to me anyway) for the Ampeg I would think a piece of charcol and the GK would be a black marble. Can you tell I'm tired and not feeling well?

last week i did a show and the Ampeg got the call. I have a couple shows coming up later in the month and the GK is going to get the call to those shows.

Is one better that the other, no not really. it just depends on what you want out of it. Right now I digging the GK, but it's also new to me, next month i may go back to the ampeg.
