I currently have a Berg NV610, an SVT pedal, an SVT VR and a Markbass head so I can comment from current experience on this. Put simply, the Markbass sounds good and can get some grind with the VT pedal if you want it but it simply does not come close to the feel of the SVT. The tone can get someway there with the VT pedal but you simply cannot get the feel and response without all those tubes. IMHO, of course.

ampeg vs markbass

True. I failed to point out in my initial post that also use the VT with the MarkBass CMD121P. Sounds like a million bucks~
I own both a Markbass LMII and an Ampeg SVT-VR, putting both through a Berg NV610. The Markbass sounds great, very musical tone and can get quite loud. The Ampeg is like putting the Markbass on steroids, more solid lows and smoother highs. I usually use the Markbass for smaller indoor halls where I can control the volume better. The Ampeg rules for outdoor shows, not to mention sends a killer DI to our PA system.

My experience:
If you just play your markbass with the knobs flat, stick with it.
But if you like to crank up the mids like i do, it does sound better on an ampeg.

Last Saturday I went to GC and played in order :
SVT 7Pro
SVT 3 Pro
SVT 4 Pro
through an Acoutic 4x10. I liked the 4 Pro and 7 Pro (I owned 2 3 Pro's and SVP pro's in the past and all konked out on me). Loved the tone of the 4 Pro and 7 Pro but preferred the 7 Pro because of the lower weight.
I then A/B'd the 7 Pro vs Markbass 800 tube. Markbass kept up in volume and was lower in weight. Something about the punch, tone and sweet mids and highs of the 7 Pro won me over and I ended up buying it (hope I don't have to use the warranty LOL). While the Markbass does have a tube it still sounds kinda false to me compared to the Ampeg. Yeah I know that was not a gig but this is what I head in my head and ears. The bass knob on Markbass is centered at 60 hz while on Ampeg it is 40 hz - better for five string bass.
