ampeg vt-40 vol. problem

hey guys, I just bought a ampeg vt-40 that should be ear bleeding 40 watts but it sounds like 2 watts. Its all original so do think it is the power tubes?

What speakers you using? And, isn't that a guitar head? And, since when is 40 watts of bass ear bleedingly loud?

They are original speakers. Yes it is a guitar combo 4x10 and your not helping. I know im in a bass forum but the vol is the problem, so again do you think it is my power tubes?

If your playing guitar through a VT40 it should be very loud.
If your playing bass through one, not so much.
Could be power tubes, OP transformer, or a number of other components that might have failed

if its really quiet but sounds fairly normal it could be the OT. otherwise its most likely in need of a servicing or revalving

Just take it to a shop and don't try to fix it on your own thinking it's going to save you money. It won't. It could be tubes, but it could be something completely unrelated, and you're not qualified to know what it is, and you could end up spending a lot of money on tubes needlessly, then you still have to take it to the shop.

Birddog's great with tube amps, and Brian Hendrix is more high tech but also does tube amps. If you'd rather not drive way out to Kissimmee, www.centralfloridaspeaker.net off of Lee Rd./John Young near 441 is a pickup point for Hendrix, but they charge extra for it.
