Amplitube without a CPU

I like using Amplitube 3 but I don't like bringing my macBook Pro to gigs. What I like from Amplitube are the effects and amp sim. Aside from Receptor wich is out of budget, is there a way around this or an all-in-one floor pedal multi-effect that will do the same?

Some of the models can be used with the IPhone, IPod Touch, and IPad. Don't what the difference is, but I saw it in an ad somewhere.

Currently they leave a little to be desired.

SMPro Audio , at namm a few years ago, was showing me aprototype of a pedal that runs vst plugins. Looked kinda like a tank and a wah pedal had a love child...

I think its still under development though??

Mac Mini? I know nothing about Mac other than they exist. But assuming you didn't need a keyboard/mouse/display the Mini is super small, you could mount it under a PedalTrain probably. Though you'd still need an interface.

Looks like it came out, was terrible, and they pulled it. The comments I've read suggest that it was under-developed. The company said they would update the OS and then never did. Unfortunate. I would love to see an option like this available.

Since vst's are just dll files, you could easily make a linux/unix host to run it. Easily for programming geeks anyhoo.

Get yourself a SKB 2U Flyer. It will house your laptop, racked interface, and give you 1U for something else like wireless, Furman, whatever. Gives you everything in an easily portable, permanently connected rolling rack case. Then all you need is your bass and a MIDI foot controller. 2 connections, plus power connections, and you're in business. Bam!

I've been using a 4U Flyer as I wanted to be able to stick a 2U power amp in there. I haven't been playing live with my laptop, but I've been using it as a portable recording studio and as a practice PA. The 4U is pretty big and heavy, and you need a full sized bass cab like a standard 4x10 or 2x12 for it to sit on top of as the 4U is a little weird with it's wheel placement on the one side.

But it's totally usable and takes all of the annoyance out of carting your laptop, interface, plugging it all in, etc.

I'm currently exploring an electronica band and would use my BOSS OC-2, GT-10B and run that all into my laptop for additional effects. The GT-10B can provide core sound sculpting and has a lot of MIDI out, though all non-latching MIDI CC. But I use Bidule as my VST host and theoretically since it has tons of MIDI morphing/routing/matrix/etc. I should be able to program some logic to use that successfully to change parameters, etc in real time. No actual bass amp, or probably bass amp modeling as I'm shooting for synth sounds. Just effects galore right to the power amp. GT-10B feeds both mono effect and DI out so I can use the DI out to sidechain into VST effects so they can trigger off the clean bass signal. Fun [and complicated] stuff!

It doesn't seem to be that easy. Haven't found a single VST-host for Linux that works properly and/or is still in development. (This is the main reason why I still have a Windows version installed.)

If Receptor is out of range, then I dare say IK's own Stomp IO is as well. But, it does look more gig ready than any other software based 'computer-less' solution.

It appears than amplitube runs quite well on older machines, so it might be worth looking for an old beaten up G4/5 machine, or indeed a PC. I wonder if an up-to-date netbook is capable, mine can run Line 6 podfarm quite well.

Otherwise I would look at something like the Pod X3 Live, which is just as powerful and flexible as amplitube, but more rugged and gig ready. You might even find you prefer it!

From what I understand of IK's Stomp IO is that it will control Amplitube but you still need a CPU to host the plugin. So not helping. But if Pod X3 sound as good as Amplitube indeed it is maybe the way to go. I'll check that.

Absolutely right, I apologise. For some reason I had it in my mind that it was a self contained processor that ran the software internally. I don't know where I got that idea from!

If you're doing fairly basic modelling and effects then probably the Line6 or BOSS floorboard multieffects would work for you. And it provides the control surface (pedals) and DSP in one tidy little box.

If you're doing hugely experimental stuff with LFO and sequencers and filters like found in the latest Amplitube and GuitarRig products then software is likely the more robust solution. Not that you can't get crazy with the floorboard products, but it's more difficult and not as rich.

I use AmpliTube on my iPod Touch. Like it a lot for home use. But I'll not use it live. I think the Line6 XT Live (I've the Line6 XT Rro) which is pedal based will be your answer.

So how do you like AmpliTube on your iPod Touch? Connected via iRig cable? As far as i understand there are no bass specific amps/cabinets/effects ... ok, maybe only 1 preset for bass ... you like the sound?
