And every piece of gear has somebody who hates it, often for the wrong reasons, too, like the guy who says: "I don't know why people say the Ampeg fliptop B15 is so great - everybody in my Korn tribute band hates the way I sound through it" (!!!)

Then again, there are people who can pertty much get "their" sound out of any gear.

I hate those people. :p

Speaking of all this Peavey and Hartke bashing, I was never really a fan of either, but I had to play through a friends Hartke head with a Peavey 410 (awesome bass player might I add) and I was pleasantly surprised. Even though I do atribute most of it's good sound to my bass (not getting snotty or anything) it had a nice low end, wasn't muddy, the high end had the snap I like and wasn't overly brittle, not to mention not the slightest bit over powering in that department. I think I found the optimum combination with getting Hartke and Peavey to sound good. Well, HE found the optimum comination...

Having said that I wouldn't even consider buying one now that my Epifani 410 is on it's way. And I still hate Ampeg cabinets. With a passion. And who here has ever tried play a 5 or 6 string bass through an Ashdown? Grrrrrrr.

Hi, i just became a member and i'm looking around for things to say... hmmm :confused:

i dislike the sound of

crate: they have the most awfully muddy combos (b60 or something) at the victorian college of the arts in melbourne, australia where i study.

peavey: i find them muddy and sterile.

swr: i cant punch through the band.. no impact

fender: the old bxr series or whatever sound really bad and even the newer combos. as for those amps that have the red light. my god just make something that sounds good and we will take it seriously!

beringer: man these things have even less punch than the swrs...

and ampeg sounds great but it just doesnt punch enough for me in a funk band setting. spose it depends what cabs/heads you use.

I have a gk 400rbIII which i love the punch but it is too harsh in the tops and sterile. but it does growl when i push it into my lab systems 210/212 rig. (nice australian cabs) i thought i wanted a wt550 but i'm not so sure. i play fender j's (ash/maple, lately rosewood/alder) and i like mids but my current set up is to messy in the mids. need a fuller tighter bass sound.
Can i just say it sucks being in australia and hearing about all these wonderful clear cabs like epifanis :hyper: and aguilar heads and stuff and never being able to demo them... GRRRRRRRR!!!!! :mad:

The worst of all is old PEAVEY!!!! THEY SUCK BIG TIME. I say old because that's what I know, I haven't tried the newer stuff. Those TKO and TNT pieces of crap, no good.

The best amp I've ever tried was an old tube works back in the 90s. Can't remember the model, it was black and had yellow writing. REAL GOOD!

I now have a BMAX which ROCKS!

I agree, actually. After 40 odd years completely failing to produce a credible bass amp (other than the extraordinarily, uniquely excellent BXR25) Fender got it more or less right with the new Bassman range. I used to use a Bassman 100 with a rock and roll band and it was just sweet.

Now, I hate all amps and just go around with my SABBDI.

Just kidding. Now don't get all worked up, you combo amp guys. It's just a bit of forum humor. One thing I learned from reading the "Combo Amp Megathread" is that some of you guys are real touchy about your combo amps. I just thought I'd blast your blood pressure up 40 or 50 points with that catchy title. :D

I played through a Hartke 8x10 and the sound guy just kept jacking up the bass on the Hartke head until it was clipping the cab and it was probably the WORST sound I've ever heard. That cab didn't have any kind of low end and was really tinny. I was afraid to dig in on my bass because the speakers sounded like they were about to blow the whole time. I hated the tone of the Ashdown MK500 head and 2 Ashdown 4x10 cabs I played through too. Anything boomy annoys me too. I've heard some really undefined, fat, round, big booty tones without all that extra booming crap.

Ones I don't care for:

Ampeg: Most of their stuff and especially the SVT350 head! :scowl:

SWR: Have yet to find anything from them that sounds good to me.

Hartke: Let me clarify, new Hartke. I loved my old 3500 but I don't like the new HA3500. The cabs are fine if its the sound your looking for.

GK: Heads I like but not their cabs.

COMBO AMPS SUCK, oh dear, looks like Mr Beets has never heared a Trace Elliot 4808 combo. They made around 48 of them and I have one. They are a V-Type pre-amp and a 300w MOSFET output stage. The interesting bit is that they are of a unique(ish) speaker config being 4x8" Celestion BG8-60s. Loud, punchy, efficient and no it doesn't lack bottom end. Cuts through my 10-peice soul band with no issues with any of my basses...

As for the MK500, they're like using knackerd GP11 AH250 or similar Series 6 GP12 AH300 Trace Elliots. Not a patch on the Trace SMXs (a personal fave) or even as good as the ABM range. My friend sold his MAG 250 as it was having serious overheating issues. He replaced it with a Hartke HA3500 which is far superior. I tried a MAG 250 210 combo a few years ago against my Trace (at the time) AH300SM (300w, 7 band EQ) and 2103H (2x10" and Horn) setup. The Trace pasted the Asdown to the wall sound wise, the only disadvantage being the Trace weighed considerably more. Crashdown, bad copies of good amps! Sorry, the thread asked my opinion and here it is! Proud Trace Elliot user... Matt
