AMT Brick "Alembic Tube Preamp" pedal

since that was pointed towards me:
No, not exactly. he did not say he wants clean,....he wants a "clean warm" sound.
(i´ve read it up on the previous page / on top / ......check yourself !)
also: @Phaidrus has posted demos of the Reggae sound he is after.
That is definitly NOT aynthing clean ;)
Just, the question is here: how do we want to define "clean" ? and how "overdriven" ?
there is a forums wiki btw. , and i had a look at this a few weeks back.
Myself very confused with this terms, and recognising that folks use this terms quite differently.

anyway.
I have a A-Bass, and i just remembered that my Bass has a active-passive switch ;)
i had a quick check, with EEC83 and EEC81 ( 12AX7 and 12at7).
See the gain numbers in my above post !

(my A-Bass was used standalone. Bass directly into it / listened with (Good) headphones, tough / no AMP afterwards)
My opinion: you *definitly* want to have a 12AX7 tube in the A-Bass !
at least when feeding it with a passive Bass.
My pickups in this Bass have btw. a quite hot output.
Could easily be that another passive Bass has less gain coming in.

With 12AX7 was the most useful range between 12 and 3 o´clock.
Bevore 12 makes no sense at all......since nobody needs tubes to drive them that low,
and to make this point also, nobody wants to have tubes to run them "really" clean, no ? ;)

From 1 o´clock could you consider the sound to be "overdriven", dependend on playing style.
I´d claim the overdriven range starts at 2 o´clock.
Again: my Bass just set to passive !

BUT: even at full CW did i not had too much overdrive, that it would no longer suit some Reggae ;)
also, -me, beeing a sounddesign guy in fact-, can i tell you, that you allways want to have a tad bit too much of what you´re surching for, ......so you can dial it a bit back, and you´d exactly know its right, .....and you also know, you´re not missing out on anything ;)

For Reggae do you want to drive your tube hot to some degree. At least my standpoint on this.
I tryed to create a Reggae sound the other day ( and also opened a own therad on this, since i have no flat wounds). You want to have some or even much* compression coming from the tube. * much / would be my claim.
And: on my attempts to create a fat Reggae sound did my compressor NOT feel right ! Not for the "compression-feel" as such.
It was the tube compression which made it way more sound like a real Reggae Bass from the good Bands.

ok, my A-Bass with my 12AX7 ( not the original one, i run a TAD RT0010 right now / and i have no spare Gold Lion right now, i could check) is delivering from 1 or 2 o´clock on, more and more and more compression, turning the gain pot finally to complete CW.
at some point the overdrive becomes noticeable and more, but its in the Bass and it is warm !
even at full CW.
I found the whole sound range perfectly well suited.

AND: i like the 3 band EQ ! i took the highs out, mids at 9 or 10 o´clock, cranking the Bass !
(and: its seems the EQ is bevore the tube ! so, taking out highs and mids made the tube act differently when driving her !......from there my feel of a warm and nice overdriven sound.
its a very nice sound range this way.

Now, for completness:
i swaped the tube to a ECC81, the one from my O-Bass.
This works also, yes !
With my Bass ( in passive mode) do i still get into "overdriven" terrain.
it could be sufficient.......but if you only had that tube, would you never know what you miss,
and: you win nothing vs. just using a good 12AX7, other than that you just could crank up the gain to full CW, and it would never be too much OD ( such setup could be nice for a live Bassist, if such full CW setting IS a perfect match)

for a fat Reggae sound, as per the demos posted by @Phaidrus in his thread, do you definitly want to check out that whole saturation/compression/warm overdrive terrain.

my A-Bass with my 12AX7, the TAD RT010, has the perfect settings for such a sound at around 1 - 3 o´clock.
12 o´clock is very clean, further CCW do you lose all the gain. It starts then quickly to dim down the gain.

Volume knob is past the tube. perfect to dial in the final gainstaging, for example whne feeding your amp.

if you want to look for tubes to roll: i´d say, look for 12AX7 and NOT 12AX7. 12AU7 is a nogo here.
the TAD RT010 works good, sounds warm. Can´t compare to the goldlion right now.
I´d take a Genalex gold Lion. ( the TAD RT010 is the same soundfamily i´d say).

A-Bass is a great device for shure.

Wow your fingers must be sore from typing.Quite the post.I have an A bass and I really like it.You seem to be up on its function. Mine has a 12AX7EH.Is the EH an abbreviation for Electro Harmonix? That's the brand of tube. You stated a 12AX7 was a good match for this pedal if I read things correctly.Do you know if AMT changed the tube in it at some point? Lastly, what does it mean to have the tube after the EQ ?

the EQ is my onboard EQ/pre in my bass. ( 4 band, with two sweeping mids)
The EQ in front of the tubes means:
i can dial in the tone in a way, that i have control over which frequenzy would make the tube ring or "shatter" first. Mostly a "Bass" versus "Highs" thing. edit: so, i can have for example a nice warm overdrive in the bass, without unpleasantly shattering highs when slapping

Is the EH an abbreviation for Electro Harmonix?
i can´t tell. but seems reasonable to think it is.
As has been stated above from somebody knowledgable:
ElectroHarmonix seems to have good tubes also, but what we find in our pedals is often just some cheaper OEM stuff. Can´t tell if the A-Bass has changed in any regard over time.

That's the brand of tube. You stated a 12AX7 was a good match for this pedal if I read things correctly.
the ECC81 and ECC83 have lesser gain.
Thats not exactly a good respectivly better match for the A-Bass, since it is allready setup to have a wider "gain range" to deliver a clean tone.
_so, if you would want to swap tubes, is it a good idea to swap (first) for another 12AX7, and NOT for another type of tube would i conclude.

While a ECC81 is a good match for the O-Bass.
it brings the O-Bass quite close in its "gain-range" vs. "overdrive behave" to the A-Bass.
Yet, still delivering enough gain for heavy overdrive up into distortion ( at least with my active Bass)

Looks like it is:
https://www.thomann.de/gb/electro_harmonix_tube_12_ax_7.htm

In all promotional photos of the A-Bass and O-Bass pedals the stock tube appears to be an Electro Harmonix 12AX7.

You won't be sorry with the A Bass,oh yeah I got an email today from AMT and they'll be holding a 20% off holiday sale on their website.I bought mine off there and shipping was pretty fast.Good CS also.Let me know if you find the sale, there may be a code. I'm sure it'll be clear on their site but I saved the email in case. They make some cool stuff. I just went back to look at the Email and I don't see a code.It says it starts on 12-20 until 12-31 only on their site AMT.com. Happy shopping!

Thanks! Yes, I received this email myself, where it even says "big sale up to 40%". So I suppose all items will be discounted at least 20% and some even more. Looking forward to it!

Thanks for the detailed account. I'll probably order the A-Bass & the dedicated power supply unit when the discount deal starts. There's some spare tubes in my drawer and will roll them in the pedal just to experiment:
  • Tung-Sol 12AX7
  • JJ ECC83S (which is a 12AX7)
  • JJ ECC81 (which is a 12AT7)
  • Ruby 12AX7AC5 HG+ 123 (yes, all that )

As of the "clean-warm" dub-reggae tone I'm after, I suppose you're right. It's not exactly clean because the perceived extra warmth is probably due to saturation and compression, which by definition is not clean.

Man, I'm not here to argue and I don't have a dog in this hunt. When someone says they are looking for clean and they want to tube roll, a 12au7 is going to have less gain than a 12ax7. Otherwise I figure he would tube roll until he's happy.

Indeed, given that I have no idea where it will all end up, a 12AU7 - or any tube for that matter - does come into question. Couldn't find one with my local stockists, so I only ordered a 12AT7. In addition, I also have some 12AX7s, as noted above, from previously tube rolling my amp head that came stock with the Ruby

After much deliberation the list has been narrowed down to the AMT A-Bass and the Xotic Bass RC Booster V2.

Which one will give a passive Pbass the juiciest extra thickness and fatness suitable for a good dub sound?

As mentioned above, to be used with a Markbass Little Mark Vintage amp head.

IMHO I vote AMT

The AMT adds quite a bit of tube tone as well as the Sushibox Particle Accelerator (also based on the Alembic preamp), but I prefer the Sushibox because it uses a 9VDC power supply, where the AMT is 12VDC only. I see no reason you couldn't get a good dub sound out of these if you boost the bass and cut back on the mids and highs.

Haven't tried the Xotic, but they also make great pedals.

Looks like all roads lead to the AMT. It will be my first and only pedal, so 12 or 9 VDC makes no difference. Also, as far as I know, the Sushibox is not available in the EU.

The AMT. No question.

Purchased one (currently on transit) because of you all :hyper:
I've been using the Alembic F-2B simulation ("Alchemy pre") that the Hotone Xtomp has for a few months, and love the results ; I believe the A-bass will easily replace it, so I'll be able to retire it as a preamp and use it for something else :woot:

You won't be sorry.I've had mine for nearly a year and it is a winner.I liked the product so much I immediately got the O-Bass as well, it's a beast. Great company with responsive C.S. also. If you own an isolated power supply that will except it you can save on the wall wart,it is a bit costly. With a little research I'm sure you can find a proper 12v converter for less.Beware though, preamp pedals can and do become an addiction.I'm living proof.

Already covered with a Cioks DC7 :hyper: I'm well aware of the preamp addiction... Will try to mitigate it with a very special overdrive pedal that can provide many different drive flavours, hopefully this will be satisfying enough ! For a time at least

As far as distortion goes the S.A. Aftershock has every type in existence, I have it but can't figure how to call up user presets.I even reached out to them and still don't know. But if you're the technical type it could be great. One that seems popular and looks very good is the MBD who's company escapes me.It sounds excellent in demos I've heard.

I've already picked one that should be here by February (Kernom Ridge if you want to look it up). Will combine it with a crossover to get massive lows and gritty mids !
