Amy Winehouse has Emphysema

I think a lot can be said, but I will just add this: I respectfully think you are wrong about "influence". One should consider what influence is. Are we talking about their influence on other musicians or on the general public or fan base? If it is the latter, then yes, Amy Winehouse has a greater impact, if it is the former, I believe the "jazz legends" have the edge.

I meant influence on the record buying public. I agree with what you said.

Take my words with a grain of salt. I want to work in the music business so I can really appreciate music that sells well. I think Amy is different than a lot of pop music (I hate a lot of it) in that she has a fresh sound that most pop doesn't. As a musician I can also appreciate the "good" music.. but also see it as most of the times not worth the (pardon the dated term) vinyl it's pressed on, commercially speaking.

I like Amy because she's a good balance between commercially successful and musically fresh.

I think the worst part is...she is really talented. Sorta like John Belushi or John Candy. What a waste.

I hope this illness or whatever is a wake up call for her and she cleans up. Anyone seen the clip of her blowing coke onstage? sheesh... it can't wait till the dressing room????

I think it's a sad waste of talent/a life, but I don't really feel sorry for her...if that makes sense.

She made the stupid choices that lead to her drug addiction/dependency. I have difficulty feeling sorry for her because of that. It's not like the crack just snuck up on her and jammed a pipe full of itself into her mouth. She chose to get involved with that stuff. She chooses to continue to use it.

And maybe that is where it lies. I do not really consider an artist's financial impact on anyone but me and my pocketbook, aside from anecdotal discussions of record sales.

I can understand how a person in your (future) position might consider her influencial, though. On the other side of the coin is my belief that music and every form of art is completely subjective. In a situation like that, everyone's opinion is true. I am willing to give just as much credence to someone who claims her music bites donkey parts as I am to someone who claims she is significant because she sells a lot of records. I do not fall into either camp.

Based on that, I'm less likely to believe the Bi-Polar disorder excuse being thrown around here.

The fact that she's willing to snort coke onstage indicates that it's for self-indulgent show.

You messed up when you were young, but it never took over your life. Could it be that nothing ever took over your life because you were a bit lucky or blessed (however you chose to define it,) and not because you were so smart or together? I think most of us who have lived a few years could have had much different lives if we only made a few different choices, and I don't think those choices are always that obvious either. Because I feel that way, I don't get into alot of condecension when talking about others who have made mistakes I did not make.

That is merely the sanctimonious train that runs through here on a regular basis.

"It didn't take me down so it shouldn't take anyone else down either". It so self-centered and non-empathetic it's almost a parody.

The idea that resources is the answer is something I find laughable at best. I smoked cigarettes for years, had people, even my very young at the time son beg me to quit. I thought about it... and I didn't. I had more money than I needed but money wasn't the reason why I smoked. Why did I keep smoking? I don't know how to explain the motivation, I do know that something compelled me to do it. I lucked up IMO and got pneumonia and that opened the door to me quitting.

The other point, is that it seems that your work as an abuse counselor might be starting to wear you down a bit. I am a long ways from being a fan of Amy Winehouse, but the language you are using to describe her seems awfully abusive. My guess is that you are transfering some frustration in other areas towards a convenient target like Winehouse.

That's exactly what I was thinking as I read each post. Wow, hate much? Because those names are nothing short of hateful IMO.

I don't want to see even people I dislike in bad health. I hope she gets help. Soon.

Oh, on the timing comments: that's something that's actually not easy for most people to listen to, let alone do; they're typically locked into some type of on the beat timing and anything else sounds foreign. I agree that Winehouse does some cool stuff ryhythymically and I've heard her do stuff I like. IMO she has talent. And she's a mess.

Very True but Jaco didn't suck.

Ah, the fog of memory.
:D

Most people remember Jaco when he was "on", either from recordings, videos or actually seeing him. But we'd have to make the short journey to let-pretendland to believe he was always on... he wasn't.
:hmm:

This is not a criticism of Jaco, just a call for a reality check in a thread where several are overdue.

So this started with crack? Just asking, because I'd think insight into how she got to where she is today would at a bare minimum be warranted prior to making firm judgements on her like this.

And no, I'm not a mental health professional. I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn recently. I just can't bring myself to be as judgemental as many here knowing what I "don't know".
:hmm:

I think the story is all bull, there was a photo of her in the London evening standard tonight with her dad and she was as fresh as a daisy.
The story probably started out in one of our daily papers which make up a lot of crap.
She's still a smack head though, having a mate like Pete Doherty isn't very helpfull.
Bad news for her that her 'husband' has been jailed, lucky for that he doesn't have see her face first thing ing the morning.
She's a nice singer though.

Ever hear "Curtain Call"? Sad, really.

It started with a choice. A bad one. And continued with many more bad ones. Nothing forced her to become an addict apart from a series of stupid choices. That's the simple truth of it. Whether or not her reasons for making those choices were justified is a matter of opinion.

Either way, you can't look at where she is today and say she made the right choices by getting involved with crack and whatever other drugs she's on.

So you have no sympathy for any addicts? Or just addicts that also happen to be big in the music biz?

I hope the former, because then you'd at least be consistent...

Let's get one thing perfectly straight.
I'm a miserable old prick!
I wouldn't pay any attention to Amy Whatsernutz or her music even if she wasn't a dumb crack whore.

I like Jaco's music and playing when he was at his best. Therefore in my little closed minded world, He wins.
All junkies are not created equal!

To imply I hate would imply that I cared. As said in an earlier post, I won't bat an eye when her heart explodes due to a crack induced haze.

I work with far too many people that want to change. That try to change. I don't have any sympathy left for a rich, spoiled sleazebag that makes a mockery of treatment, and of all of MY clients that are busting their asses to change.

Here's a SAD reality: Everyone CANNOT be saved. I would much prefer to focus my energy on ones that are willing to put something into their treatment themselves, than waste not my time, but the time I can spend with clients that actually want to accomplish something, and aren't busy writing songs making mockery of the sad reality of substance dependence.

She disrespects every substance addicted person on the planet that actually wants to change when she sings that garbage.

Who cares about what Amy Winehouse does?

Has she ever pretended to not be affiliated with drug use?

"They said I gotta go to rehab I said no! No! NO!".

A friend of mine introduced me to her music long before she became a household name. She certainly never claimed to be straight and narrow, so why should anyone act as if they are concerned or not. The only thing in her life that has changed is how much attention other people pay to it.

Like Bill Hicks said:
"If you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, then go home and burn all your records, all your tapes, and all your CDs because every one of those artists who have made brilliant music and enhanced your lives?
RrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrEAL ****ing high on drugs.
The Beatles were so ****ing high they let Ringo sing a few songs!"

I have a hard time feeling sympathy for addicts in general. They don't get extra points for being rich or famous.

A few years back we had a series of deaths in my family. We had a funeral every month for eight or nine months. Two of those were people who were young and healthy and should have had many years in front of them. My cousin Justin had had addiction issues for a while, got clean for several months, and then relapsed. It happens. But apparently he used the same amount he could have handled back when he was using regularly, or he got stronger stuff, because in stead of getting high, he just died. He was a kid, only twenty seven. I feel sympathy for his parents. I feel sympathy for his brother and sister. I don't feel sympathy for him. Because he did it to himself.

I have a really hard time feeling sympathy for anyone who chooses to do something that will kill them.

So AW has COPD from the way she has abused her body? Tough.

If she can clean herself up then I will give her credit. Until then I just can't rpetend to care.
