It totally depends on your knowledge and understanding of music. A great musician with a strong background in theory is going to pick up ANY stringed instrument and understand how to make it function on some level.

A dude who practices YouTube shred videos all day but has no idea what his note names are will likely struggle regardless of what kind of technical chops he's developed on the instrument.

Agreed on the points above. One big thing is that the role of the bassist and guitarist is quite different. If the player doesn't understand that, the transition will not go well.

Bass is all about sounding good. It's a bulky instrument and you can easily tank a bands sound by being sloppy or inattentive. Guitar is an incredibly forgiving instrument, you can be off time and half out of tune and still pop out something worth listening to.

Sounding good on guitar is easy. In terms of sounding "impressive" and ignoring string muting, dynamics it's easier for a guitarist to grab a bass and pound out meaningless 16th notes.
