I went to visit my young cousin who I had heard had taken an interest in electric guitar and was pretty surprised by what I heard. He doesn't play other people's music or seem to be interested listening to music, so he pretty much has picked it up and does his own thing to express himself and pass time. He falls somewhere on the autistic spectrum.
I listened to him for half an hour and the kid plays really discordant music and somehow, everything he plays is undeniably in 7/8 timing. It is amazing to me that he has seemingly figured to avoid
''melodic" intervals and liberally uses tritones, half-steps, and perfect intervals, as well as his concept of rhythm.
I think he's on an interesting course of development, free from outside ideas. I just don't know if recommending he get lessons or instruct him myself would do more harm than good or if he'd even be receptive to it.
Basically, I want to know if this is common from people that "do their own thing" and if you have any ideas/thoughts to share. I've just never heard/seen anything like it and he clearly has talent.
