An MTD Question???

Joel,

I'm hoping to tap into your experience here. Where does the maple/ebony combination fit into all the other neck combinations you've tried?

Thanks,
LeonD
One very hip combo to check out is Ebony on a Maple neck with an Alder body/Maple top. Big, fat and articulate.

Yeah, I bet. Mine's exactly this except the ash body instead of alder, and I know the ash is brighter than the alder. The thing sustains for about 6 years, but won't be quite as warm (without dialing it in with a touch of bass, which is usually what I do as needed). But man, the clarity... yikes... :)

....I've said it a bunch of times before and I'll say it again... my MTD made me a better player...

I totally agree Brad! It made me clean up my left hand technique as well.

I'm glad that you put in your two-cents on the wenge / wenge neck issue. That'll keep things balanced here. I know that you've spent some quality time with your MTD and can no doubt make her sing! Any truth to the comments about the Wenge / Wenge neck basses having a bit of "slight compression" relative to non-Wenge or partial-Wenge necks?

I think that is true to a degree. If I push hard it can have the controlled sound of a compressed bass. OTOH played legato with the pads of my fingers and it doesn't exhibit that trait at all.

One of my personal hallmarks for an excellent bass is one that can go from a thick fingerstyle sound to a punchy fingerstyle sound to a killer articulate, almost completely opposite slap sound... solely by using my hands. My 635 does that. So do a few other basses of mine, like my F's and probably surprisingly to most people my Elricks. My MTD moved me in a direction technique-wise that made controlling my Elricks a snap.

You give Mike a call? He might have some in stock for you to try and see which one you like better, and if you make the trip up I wouldn't mind going with ya, just make sure I keep my checkbook at home so I don't end up with his whole stock :p

I had to laugh when I saw this because I feel the same way every time I go to Mike's shop. We were just up there last weekend and it's such a great environment. Mike has an unbelievable selection of woods to choose from. We usually end up going a bit crazy and ordering more stuff than we had originally planned on.

Just don't try to buy mine :D

i'm sure mike is already sick enough of my "too many for one man to send" emailing, and phone calls when he seems to be eating lunch. :hmm:

but how far is mike's shop from NYC? does he allow visitors? dont wanna bug him when he's working.

Mike is about 75 - 90 minutes from the city without traffic. I would check-in with him first though before making the journey.
