Analogue Vs. Digital

So you can extract binary code (digital code)? Pulse width does not contain binary code that I have seen. Agedhorse (Genz Benz engineer) and Jerrold Tiers (former SLM/Ampeg) have covered this several times. But we could all be wrong.
Maybe I take a purist view of "digital". By those standards the modulation in FM broadcast could be called "digital"?

While some class D amps may indeed be controlled by digital circuits or include digital signal processing devices, the power stage deals with voltage and current as a function of non-quantized time. The smallest amount of noise, timing uncertainty, voltage ripple or any other non-ideality immediately results in an irreversible change of the output signal. The same errors will only lead to incorrect results when they become so large that a signal representing a digit is distorted beyond recognition. I understand that. It is a very different retail space versus 20 years ago. Very little of this stuff is in local distribution at the few brick and mortar music stores left these days. The good news is, assuming you live in the US, Musician's Friend carries most of the major brands (GK, Genz, Aguilar, Eden, Orange, Ampeg), and they have a 30 day (I think) trial period with 'no questions asked' return policy. So, you are just out the shipping if you try something you don't like.

Just remember that there is just as much variation within the 'lightweight amp' category as there is in the 'heavy amp' category. A GKMB500 sounds total different from an Aguilar TH500 which sounds totally different from a Markbass LMIII which sounds totally different from a Genz Streamliner, etc., etc. Just like an Eden WT550 sounds quite different from a GK700rb or a Thunderfunk, etc., etc.

Lots of good reviews of all this stuff on the site. It takes a bit to dig through it, but is most probably worth it to narrow you choices down.
 
Ok so here is another dumb question is my eden wt800 all analog or part analog and digital?

Listen to the EE's above. Your question is meaningless. The primary difference is the weight and type of power supply. You are MUCH better off not thinking in those terms when considering the purchase of a head.

Again, the 'digital' thing came from the mistaken belief that 'class D' meant digital. It does not. Just like 'class G' does not mean 'goldilocks':p

Back on point, one of the things that makes a comparison of most amps to the WT800 is that it is a bridge-able dual mono amp that puts out a LOT of power into 8ohms. The WT800 will outperform most monoblock amps of any class or type when driving a single large 8ohm cab. That being said, when Eden kind of went belly up, many Eden players moved to Genz Benz, and the 8 pound or so Shuttle Max 9.2 would most likely make you happy, if you are looking to lighten the load. The Genz is 'tighter and brighter' set flat, but the EQ is quite powerful, and is somewhat similar to the WT preamp section. IMO and IME.
 
Class D amplifiers are actually pulse width modulators, ie analog devices that have been around for many decades (certainly pre WW2) and if you read/understand the basic principle of operation, they are clearly not in any way digital. The pulse width is an analogue of the instantaneous input voltage at each sampling instant. There is no numerical representation anywhere so it's not digital.

"D" just happened to be a an available letter. I've got an old AKG D190 microphone - the "D" doesn't make that digital either.

That is a Class D amplifier. In this case, the intermediate output is digital - the key word being "pulse"; the modulating input is indeed analog.

(I'm just a EE, trying to dispel some TB myths...) :)

That too is almost always analog, not digital. (There aren't many class D amps that actually use digital means to modulate pulse width; it's actually feasible but seldom practical.)
 
there are good amps, bad amps and indifferent amps. Amps can be made with tubes, transistors, mosfets or class D PWM power modules however the type of technology used in the creation of the amp has got nothing to do with whether it is a good, bad, or indifferent amp....the design of the amp?..well thats another story.
