Most in the US, even if they were around in the day, can’t fathom how huge Bolan and company were in Britain, and how much he affected that generational subset musically. One hit wonder here, of course. A lot of people I knew thought they were just silly, but that was the time when “rock” was taking itself too seriously.

For me, the rhythm section was the best thing about the Smiths. Morrissey was brilliant but basically insufferable as a personality, and I never had much enthusiasm for Marr's jangly riffs. But the drums and especially the bass were and are fantastic.
