they're practically playing basses, anyway. check out Earth Departure and please tell me how they get that sound? I know there's distortion there and i know they're using some crazy kind of fingerstyle-double thump technique, so how can i get a double thumbed bass to sound like that?

He does the same "double thumb" technique that Wooten uses, if I recall correctly.
Sometimes he does a slap with his thumb, followed by plucking with his pointer and finger. He utilizes a lot of "bass" techniques.

That's not really a bass tuning. His lowest string is just tuned to E1. Everything else is as it would normally be on a 7 string guitar.
The bass on the first album was actually done with a regular guitar with an octave down effect on it, or something. No actual bass guitar was used.
