Most of the stuff I love has the picked P sound: The Jam when Foxton switched to the P, some of the Smithereens tunes ("Blood and Roses" sounds like a P-bass), some of REM, U2's "Two Hearts Beat As One", some Blur, Psychedelic Furs, Go-Gos...

...Get A Grip On Yourself by the Stranglers and Burnell smokin' that thing... whoa...

etc. etc.

BTW the Rick with Pick thing is cool too...

Well I play almost purely fingerstyle but I used to play with both a pick and fingers. I just grew to like the sound of my fingers more. I have nothing against others who play with picks and it sounds just fine when they play but for me I will only use my fingers. I'm just better with em.

Picks are fun! I love trying to do it all. For great pick players you should try, Anthony Jackson, Carol Kaye, Steve Swallow, Jerry Peek, Wolfgang Schmid, Helmutt Hattler, Martin Turner, John Entwistle, Pete Trewavas and...That's all I have off of the top of my head. Thanks for the nice words Mike! Much appreciated!:)

Hmmm... this thread got me thinking again... (which is a dangerous situation, my two brain cells could either make me the next "Survivor", the next "American Idol", the next Rush Limbaugh, or the next Osama)

With all this talk about bass and pick vs fingers vs self securities vs insecurities and what not, I think I'm going to innovate a new way to interface with my keyboard.

Weedeater...

Miniature bullwhip...

yes we are good for something sometimes ... though i thought it was funny when my friend Brandon (who's an amazing guitarist) put all the bass players in the room to shame the first time he picked up a bass in our high school's music room ... god that guys great.

I was in a bass guitar store (that's right, in phoenix we have a store dedicated entirely to basses!!) and there was a guy playing pretty well with a pick. This store does tend to have some seriously talented bass players - and one guy there said "Bass wasn't meant to be played with a pick!!" and the guy looked up and said "That's right, originally it was played with a bow."

That said, i don't dislike pick players, but i don't use a pick. You do have more range of style with fingers. And the majority of my favorite bass players as well as the bass gods tend to use fingers. As a rule, if a guy is playing bass and has no talent in a dive bar rock band, i bet he has a pick in his hand.
i do really like matt freeman....

meh, i'll do it for you ... save your pro or anit-pick rants for the original thread, just say what you voted for. And i play both ways, but i spend more time playing with a pick, and for a good reason.

I played guitar for almost 4 years, so i know how to hold a pick and how to use it. However i don't know the proper way to use my fingers, so to avoid developing bad habbits i'm going to try to refrain from playing with my fingers until i learn the proper way to do it.

Yes. That's why the pick has such a bad rap in certain circles. Time and care should be devoted to using a flatpick. Time and care. Indeed.

I honestly cannon't play with a pick. I have tried several times but I don't feel I can move as fast as I can using my fingers and it just doesn't feel right on a bass, but it does feel right on a guitar when I play one.

Yes there are other reasons besides speed that someone would want to use a pick for, such as tone. Well, with my fingers and EQ settings I get the tone I want without a pick, but not everyone is the same.

I don't think any less of players who use picks, it's their choice because it's what feels/sounds good to them.

It's all about personal preference IMO.
