When a voice coil heats the consequence is a rise in dc resistance.Power compression at high operating levels has the effect of sounding as if a compressor/ limiter is added .Power compression is normally accompanied by a shift in LF alignment that can have an effect of the response sounding somewhat "boomy" and less controlled.Iam fairly uncertain that you may be correct .What do I know Iam just a bass player.
I WAS. I play a TC Electronic rig. I was in a very clean, pop sounding band for a little over three years. The TC was PERFECT. I mean, absolutely perfect in every way. Now I'm in a band playing stuff like Alice in Chains and Rage Against the Machine. I need something a bit grittier.

If you continue to evolve as a player, it's likely that the rig that fits the sound in your head today won't fit the sound in your head in 5 years. I'm happy with my rig right now - SVT and two Genz Benz 4X10 cabinets. I'm happy with my basses, I usually stick with one main bass and a few that I noodle on, although I own about 10. Always looking to try out new pedals (damn you Ryan!!!!).
I'm running an Ampeg SVT 3 Pro through a SVT 212 AV, and yes, I love the tone. I want to pick up a Reddi DI to replace my Countryman, but I can think of no other changes that I'd make.

I think it's been about 6 years with this rig I have now, and I'm still as happy as could be. Probably the best investment I've ever made.
You left off the most important part of my statement, "If you continue to evolve as a player."
I'm very happy with my rig--a Walter Woods stereo head through a Berg EX112ER and a HT112ER--but I would jump at the chance to acquire a Bergantino IP112ER. (Anyone have one?)
