Apart from the new implementations of various PWM amps (class D, class T, digital etc) there have been no particular advancements in SS amp design. Designs have become refined with better components, modelling and design techniques, but the devices haven't become more linear, which is about the only place they can improve. It's much the same as the Chev V8; still the same basic design as 40 years ago, just refined to the nth degree.
I make the humble suggestion that [better] design techniques have more to do with how an amp sounds and feels than anything else. Apart from class D/SMPS products, the semiconductor devices themselves are not (and haven't been for a very long time) the limiting factor.
