Just curious did you read what the OP said:

He doesn't like their music

The band is auditioning a friend that lives in thier town

6 hour comute ( not 1.5 and not 2, 3 hours one way)

He doesn't like their music

The band is auditioning a friend that lives in their town

That's a new level of awesome. Cut and paste the same response to 4 different people. As if it needed to be said in the thread more than once. And it begs the question:

No where does it say that he or she doesn't like it.

My take? They want to audition you even though they have a friend in town that is auditioning as well. Either the management isn't talking to the band, they are very interested in you, or they are unsure about their local friend.

It sounds like it may be the first of those options, but you can't know for sure. If you audition, the worst thing that happens is that they pick their friend, and you never hear from them again. You got practice auditioning, learned new song, met contacts, and will walk away a more prepared player for the next time you audition. If you can swing the time and money, go for it.

Not the kind of music I usually play means he doesn't like it.

I don't usually play jazz, but I like it. I don't usually play classical music, but I like it. I don't usually play shoegaze music, but I like it. I can go on and on.

"Not usually playing something" has absolutely nothing to do with "not liking it".

Hmmm, not the way I look at it, for me;

I don't usually play jazz, because I don't like it. I don't usually play classical music, because I don't like it. I don't usually play shoegaze music, because I don't like it. I can go on and on.

If you can afford the time and effort and you want to audition, do it! You will have expanded your horizons musically. You will have tested your mettle in a genuine competition. If you win, great. You can decide then if it really makes sense to take the gig. If you lose, the experience will still serve you well at your next audition.

I got back from the audition a few hours ago, they didn't want me but I was expecting that. They were all very nice and they gave me money to cover my petrol costs so I can't complain... I wish they'd confirmed the audition sooner though because they only told me for definate yesterday. They said it was hard to pick, I didn't ask them why they picked the other bassist but I will send them a polite email asking for constructive criticism to help me improve. Overall I'm glad I got my first band audition out of the way, hopefully next time I'll be less nervous. I think they picked the hottest day of the year so far... My car was like an oven the whole 6 hours! Nasty!

Well, at least they helped out with ga... PETROL. Can't ask for more than that. Chalk one up for the experience.

I wouldn't read too much into not getting the gig. Sometimes you can go to an audition, play circles around them, then not get the gig because you're not the right "FIT".

Then you find out they hired a 350 pound goatee'd bald guy with 3 fingers, playing a Chinese Squire and wearing a Hawaiian shirt... :scowl:

...but i'm not bitter. ;)
