Well here's is a quick review. I got fired from my fav band early this year when the drummer wanted the past bassist (the flake) his buddy back in the band.
Ok, so I got back to into the game and played here and there and nothing stuck. This past summer I ran ad and got a responce from a female led originals band.

I kinda stayed away but she worked on me and I tried out and got the spot. The band is decent with a feisty front gal who sings great...an amazing voice. They have a Good drummer who's pretty cool.
Guitar #1 is pretty good and I like him and his style. Guitar #2 is not so hot. He is out of tune allot, flubs up his leads, and botches simple chords. He is also off key with his vocals. Now sometimes he's kind of on but most of the time he's way off. He smokes a ton of hippy lettuce and it shows in his playing and thought process.

About a month after I joined the band in a conversation with him guitar#2. It then hit me that Guitar#2 and I had a little bad history in the past. It was nothing serious and he doesn't remember it...wonder why?
He and the female lead are connected at the hip and have been playing together on and off for years, so he's going nowhere. What's sad is she is way to talented for anyone in this band including me but she sticks with him.
Lately he has been pushy and opinionated to often. He excuses his mistakes as being a play on the fly guy and makes no excuses for sloppy playing and is good with it. He can't figure out how to setup a band for a show or run a simple PA. When you try to tell him he won't listen.

I have been biting my lip. Tonight Guitar #1 (good guy) texted me wanting to know if he could offer some constructive criticism to me. I said "sure" and he goes on to tell me he and the band feel I'm overplaying on some songs.
Now I have been in this band for three months and this is the first I heard of this. He said that I'm a real bass player not like their last one who stuck to the roots. I was told to develop my style when I joined this band....really? Guess not.

I feel it's Guitar#2 more than anyone else saying this and it took me by surprise. I think he sees me as a threat musically and that I get the band to side with my ideas. I'm only offering my experiences and contacts and he always is critical of them.
I told guitar#1 I will not change my style since guitar #2 lacks in his playing and It requires me to fill the band out. This is something they told me they once loved about me then but now I overplay?
For anyone saying I overplay is a joke. I'm a mediocre player just a solid player sticking with the drums.
I told guitar#1 lets just do the gigs we have booked and see where it goes. Honestly I'm a little relived. I'm starting to feel the whole original music scene is behind me and I want to focus on good covers and good gigs with pay.
Sorry I'm venting but what's a guy to do? Starting to just give up on bands but I love playing in them.

I would exit gracefully. No need to remain in a situation that is stacked against you. A search for the right band can take some hustle. Leaving gracefully will allow them to recommend you to another band if they know someone is looking. Rage quitting is fun but it gives you a bad rep. Maybe consider what genre fits your playing style and specify that in your ads. Sometimes you have to "dumb it down" if you want to fit in. If that's not acceptable, it's time to move on.

That's great advice..thank you. I'm a roots player and really want to get back to playing country music old, new, who cares. It's getting popular again and although I don't like all the nu-country its getting booked.
I might have an opportunity to try out with a local country covers band but so far communication with the he bandleader is sketchy.
I will bow out gracefully. It's not a rage quit situation yet and Guitar#1 said he would be bummed if I left... but understood. I booked half of the gigs we have coming up thru November and I will stick to playing them, but will keep looking while I'm doing it.

I don't know I'm starting to think it may be me in some ways. I have been allot more cynical and defensive in my stands with bands and playing since my ordeal early this year. I know I'm venting here to the masses and most wont respond but it feels good  I just don't think I like this band, the players, or hang enough to focus on changing my style to suit them. I feel what I play is tasteful and supportive and I do my job well. Unlike guitar#2 I can play the songs the same way every time. I will stay around and see where this goes but it looks like a dead end ahead.

Sounds like it's time to bail. If it were me, I'd probably do the shows I'd agreed to, then tell them thanks but no thanks. Pack my stiff and drive away in to the sunset. Never to be seen again. Life's too short for this kind of drama. IMHO

I agree. There is more of the story but only so much needs to be said. This band started to gain traction when I joined. I had some hope for it to get better. I saw when I joined the band that it made guitar#2 get on his game.... but it didn't last long.
There a large part of me that fears being bandless since truthfully performing out is why I play. I just need to face that this band is limited as long as guitar#2 is leading it.

I've only played in one band that had little to no drama. I've pretty much given up on finding another band with no drama. Even bands that don't play for money love drama. Musicians suck.

 Again! Good point. I have been lucky for the most part in my 15 years of bands and music of having pretty good folks around me. I guess the best situation was my 5 year long originals bands with guys who just enjoyed each other. There was never an argument and we had a blast. The spinoff of that band was great for a year then the bottom fell out.
Since then I have had a rocky road with bands and musicians. I'm starting to wonder myself what to do.
I can cruse in this band but its just not sitting well with me. Who knows maybe it will get better? I cant even get a dude to answer a phone call or texts about an audition they want me out on for in a week. Yea musicians suck!

I've read all your posts and I think there are a ton of us out there in the exact same position you're in. I honestly don't know what to do. If it weren't for the fact that I play *every* Sunday at church I'd probably throw my basses into the garbage and forget I'd ever played an instrument before, that's how frustrated I am.

It just may not be a good fit, and they can feel you are not hot for playing originals. As others have suggested, exit gracefully - never burn a bridge. But I don't think talking down one of the members, when one person was offering criticism was the way to go. You may not agree, but it was an opinion.

That's a damn shame. I have nothing against cover players, and if the real focus is to make as much luchre as possible from your playing, it's probably the right way to go. But it sounds like this is being driven by your current situation as much as anything else. Douchenozzles exist on both sides of the cover/originals line, just like doucenozzles exist on both sides of any line you draw through any arbitrary group of people. And I type that as much for some of the people who I generally respect, but have made some recent regrettable comments of late, which make it clear they've lost touch with the Douchenozzle Dispersion Principle.

I guess the best advice I can give would be to extricate yourself from the current band, as gracefully and quickly as possible, take some time to cool down, then think on how you're feeling and proceed from there. Too easy to take a rash decision in the heat of the moment. Of course, being an originals player myself, and a composer/lyricist, I know that I would regret walking away from it entirely. But there are days when I'd like to try the covers thing myself, just sit back, and hold the groove without any more investment than my playing...

Bottom line, people suck, but they are all we have to play with and play for...

Just one guy's observations and opinion here, but you asked for it:

1. Often, when other musicians say the bass player (or any musician) is overplaying, there is at least a grain of truth in there. Sometimes it's a whole burlap sack full of grains of truth. Right or wrong, they got accustomed to and appreciated their previous bass player's simpler approach. You inherited that. I have no way of knowing in your situation, but I would take the suggestion seriously (especially since it came from Guitar #1 who you respect) and have them tell you where they think you need to simplify and maybe have them demonstrate what they would have you play. Apply their advice as you see fit.

2. Re: Guitar #2 and lead singer--you're screwed, glued, and tattooed. They're buds. You're the new kid. There is not a tactic known to man that will "fix" that "problem" without causing some butthurt. The only thing to do is make a silent, personal choice to either stay and accept it for what it is or politely bow out.

3. If you love playing in bands, keep this in mind: They all involve a sacrifice and compromise of some sort. Especially those you join (as opposed to those you start and lead). Humility goes a long way toward enjoyment.
