Another Band Name Thread

...So and so & Mojo Rising...
We got a local band using almost exactly this.

...but I suspect it does matter when you're starting out and trying to get people to come out to your gigs. When you see a band name for the first time, it's bound to create an image in your mind of what that band is or isn't like. "Polly and the Pink Flamingoes" puts a very different image in my mind than does, say, "Rat Piss Battery." Of course, the trick is to figure out what kinds of mental associations people will make when they hear a given name...

Sorry, but I have to disagree. The only people who fret over the image a band name conjures, or worry about people associating a name with a particular musical genre are the people trying to decide on a band name. IME the general public will associate the musical style of an unknown band with the venue, not the band name.

If Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen were unknown and playing at a metal venue people are going to think it's a metal band. If the same band is playing at a country venue, they will assume it is a country band. While neither assumption would be correct, who would ever think rockabilly renaissance having never heard them perform, unless they were playing a venue with a rep for rockabilly. If it's simply a generic concert venue, the (unknown) opening act will be thought of as in the same basic vein as the (known) headliner.

And once a band develops a local/regional following the name is immaterial except for recognition of a known quantity. Who would have ever thought Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys was a neo country band back in the day before they established a regional following? With a name like that I'd think punk, except they came along before punk was anything more than the kid with a DA and a mexican switchblade. Once I heard them the name made perfect sense, but before that I had no idea what to expect beyond a rather cryptic review I'd read that motivated me to seek out their music.

Strictly a personal opinion, but if you are looking for a name that defines your band, pick a single word song title from the genre you want most to be identified with, and use that.

I was once in a band called Terraplane. 3 guesses as to what what kind of music we played.

These days if asked for a band name idea, I'd go with something easy to convert to a URL.
