Double Bass another bass build project

The purfling will come this summer; it was either inlay the back, and not have the bass available this season, or, skip the pufling and have the bass ready for the last concert.

The bass was played at the last concert of the school year last night.:hyper:

The top is solid spruce wood, carved with hand tools. I have since blackened the inside of the f-holes, looks much better.

One thing I noticed with a natural cherry finnish; it looks pale, under the bright stage lights of a theater, wile at the same time, the brightly colored orange cellos and basses, looked terrific. Must be similar to stage paint and actors; looks silly back stage, but under the theater lights, it great.

Thanks Martin, I was using pictures of your Panormo copy for one of my guides.

Tuners came from the New Cleveland Group in Cleveland OH. They seem to be a discreet company; No web site, no catalog, not sure what they do, besides sell these bass tuners.

The finnish on the cherry is clear shellac, steel wool, wax.

The spruce top. has a shellac finnish w/light yellow dye powders added.

I also used some artist oil colors to tone up the spruce top.

The New Cleveland Group was started by a Russian who made mostly cellos, then he had them made in Mexico. He later sold it to Yangbing Chen who is importing from China. They currently are primarily a wholesale dealer for the trade. They 'borrowed' the bass gear design from KC Strings. Their first gears weren't too good, but maybe they are better now?
Their instruments are much higher priced than most Chinese imports, but are of good quality.

Hey CT!

I am so sorry I missed this thread earlier…this bass is gorgeous…your son must be over the moon proud of you and his new custom bass. :) I can see why Arnold was impressed and wants you to move closer…you have real bass building skills. :D It was great to have met you in person and I can see why others encouraged you to enter this bass in the ISB Maker’s competition...she’s a beauty. What an accomplishment…now build the next bass for YOU! ;)
