Another Clipping and Ohm thread, sorry

Ok so I have been reading up on all these threads trying to get informed because I am purchasing my first cab, and have already purchased the head, a GK Backline 600 300 watt 4ohm, for 100 bucks. I dont have bass speakers yet, had the amp head plugged into PA speakers and was worried about damaging them so I kept the volume down, but the clipping light on the head would come up everytime i slapped. When id turn the volume up a bit (with the boost down) it wouldnt come on as frequently. I was confused as to what clipping was until I heard it, but why does this happen? And when I do get a bass cab, will this continue happening?

Also, ive read about underpowering/over powering, many people mentioned that an underpowered amp head to speaker is going to make it clip more, why is this? I plan on purchasing an Avatar B212 500 watt 8ohm cab, will my 300 watt gk head fall into clipping more? And if I planned to add another cab into the mix, if it were to be a 210 id want it to be at 8ohms aswell, and if it were a 115 at 4?
