Hello. Longtime lurker but first time posting.

I’m looking for help/suggestions if a compressor pedal may be what I’m looking for. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I really don’t have any experience with compressor pedals.

I’ve pretty much always played rock and some alt-country. I usually play a Geddy Lee Jazz, Les Paul Triumph, or a modded T-Bird (‘63 Thunderbuckers in it). Amps are either a Mesa 400+ for larger venues and a Genz 6.2 Shuttle when I want to be more portable. Cabs are either a 4x10 HLF, 1x15 EV cab, or a 2x15 w/ JBLs. No effects other than the occasional use of a Lo-Tone Fuzz.

I’m in a new band situation with more of a singer songwriter sort of vibe. Would a compressor help me even out my sound a bit between using my fingers and pick? Also looking to increase sustain a bit if at all possible. Would a compressor help? If so can you suggest a pedal that may fit the bill? I’ve been reading up on reviews and other posts but kind of feel like I’m going around in circles. One pedal that seems to make sense is the Diamond Bass Comp but I’d love any thoughts / suggestions people might have. Thanks.

If you're new to compression, it may make sense for you to go for something that has some sort of display showing what the compressor actually does. Compression is a pretty subtle effect so I think this can be very helpful. The MXR and the Empress do this with a series of leds, which basically act as a meter for how much compression is in effect at any given time. There may be more like this but IIRC these are the more notable with this feature.
