Another DI Box question...

I've had great results recording my active Wal bass with the passive and very inexpensive IMP-2, but have much less than stellar results recording my passive Jazz and Precision basses with the same DI. Does anyone have suggestions as far as if active DI boxes work better with passive basses? I know it can all depend on what sound you're after, so just looking to hear what others have settled on with their choices of gear or have experienced. Thanks in advance!

Recording a passive bass trough DI will make the tone already good, but there will be always a difference between a passive and active bass, even if you use the same DI, it's the source that make the difference.
Anyway some people like to use a tube di instead a regular one for passive bass, or better use a bass preamp and than send the signal to the DI.
I use the U5 and when I have to record one of my passive bass and I want more colour on it, I like to use a couple of different preamp, usually or a SWR Interstellar or the Aguilar TH500 preamp section.
