Nope, never had that issue. I generally change the strings every 5 or 6 years (give or take) and/or when I snap one.

For the life of me I'm unable to find an adequate demo of the Dunlops to where I can really hear their unique characteristics.

You should. That said, I have the Dunlop DBFS50110 on two basses. The Dunlops are the only other flats I like. The two basses have maple necks whereas all basses I have with the Rotos are rosewood. That should mean nothing but for some reason to my ears, the Dunlops make those basses sing.
