Another GC Thread

All basically true, and verified by a friend who used to work there for years. That's why I refuse to buy anything there - I go look, and then the helpful people at either my local, small town music store, or a nearby Sam Ash, will special order for me if they don't carry it...

Yeah well my local place is still pretty shoddy. Crappy selection plus the most awkward, clueless staff. To this date I've still had better luck at my local GC (which is a half hour away) than I ever have in any local shop near me.

What he says it true though, I wasn't in sales though I was a tech there. Basically you don't earn a bonus until you sell enough product to pay for the wages GC pays you....it's not very straightforward and you have to sells tons to make a decent bonus. It's hard because you spend extra hours working at the store when you aren't making and sales like opening and closing time.

Why havn't I been fired even though I'm not fading? Because it doesn't cost GC anything to employ sales people since they have to fade! If you think about it the only employees GC has to actually pay are the warehouse/operations staff and management!

A bit math-challenged, I'd say. Not that minimum wage is anything to write home about, but it's basically a minimum wage job.

WHAT THE **** DOES GC DO WITH ALL OF THE PROFIT?

GC has not been a profitable business for five years.

I worked there about 12 years ago, and this is actually a better deal than I had. When I worked there it was a "team bonus". So everyone in the guitar department was dependent on each other. So if the team's goal was 10,000 profit for the month (the same BS margin described in the post) we'd each get $100. Then the next month they'd raise the goal. If we hit it we'd get a bonus then they'd raise it again. Eventually, no bonus because the goal became unreachable.

So I lost all motivation to work there. I knew my stuff, I was young and eager and excited to be working there. But they took all my motivation away and I became the typical slacker GC employee because I just didn't care.

Welcome to sales!!!!

It's a common practice to keep a young sales staff hungry if you need $10,000 in sales tell the staff you need $30,000 just to break even if they don't get $30,000 you beat them up and tell them either get it or find another job then the next month they get you $40,000 you tell them it was better but not by much you kick them a little bonus just enough to take the wife or girlfriend out to dinner and to make them feel like if they work just a little harder they are going to be rich :)

Fading is how most sales jobs work. The company is fronting you money, in anticipation of what you will sell. If you sell over this amount, then you get money on top of you bass. I worked in the mortgage industry as a loan officer. It worked this way here as well. I used to work at Sam ash, and almost everyone faded their base. Gc is not a good place to work, but this guy sounds like a baby who can't sell anything. You aren't there for your knowledge, you are there to sell things. The best salesman I know at Sam ash knew very little about gear. Sad, but true.

"You certainly don't pal 'cause the good news is you're fired. The bad news is you got all you got, just one week to regain your job, starting with tonight, starting with tonight's sits. Oh, have I got your attention now? Good. 'Cause we're adding a little something to this month's sale contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac El Dorado. Anybody want to see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is your fired. You get the picture? You laughing now? You got leads. Mitch and Murray paid good money. Get their names to sell them. You can't close the leads you're given, you can't close sh*t, you are ****, hit the bricks pal and beat it 'cause you are going out."

As someone who regularly works 60-70 hour weeks and many weekends and holidays I find the post to be rather whiny and/or naive. Coming in an hour before opening? THE HORROR. Perhaps he could take that time to set up a bass or two.

True... I have 6 different jobs right now. I work 80 hours a week. I've washed dishes, mowed lawns, dug ditches... and I can tell you without hesitation, the most demeaning work I've ever done was at GC.
