Yknow, just to take the first part of that at face value for a second - I personally don't know either way about component quality. Some people will pay sick money for an old cap or transformer though. Regardless, IF I found a new amp that sounded like a cool old amp I know I couldn't afford it. Fun for me is finding a cool old amp CHEAP. I actually once did find a silly deal on an Aguilar DB359, and couldn't pass that up either, but I sold it eventually.

The best old amp score of anyone I personally know would actually be the '65 Champ my mom got for $5 at a flea market.

Hmmm lets see... I got an old Ahed/Gbx for free! a music teacher was throwing it out cause it wasnt working. Well I took it home, opened it up and what do you know! two wires were twisted together without making proper contact. Pretty good deal all in all...:bassist:

Since I had snuck out from work (they shouldnta left me unsupervised) I had them hide it behind the counter for me, and returned after work to check it out.

Wow.

So now it's happily at home, and has me thinking of selling my 400+, my 300T AND my Super Lead. It's a KILLER amp, for bass and guitar. Cleaned up, full of JJ 6L6s and my favorite preamp tubes, it floors me. My guitarist (also a bassist) pronounced it the best amp he's ever encountered.

Oh, and it has the graphic EQ.

$250.

The cheapest head in the store.

There's one I've never heard of. Free for anything is tough to beat, though. I'd totally forgotten about this old thread.

I was just playing the D180 a minute ago with my "AD" bass, whatever the heck that is - nobody sems to have heard of them. It still needs a truss rod tweak, but I don't have a tool that fits, so it's going to buzz a bit till I can get one. Still love the tones the Mesa produces. I've sold off a bunch of stuff, including a 400+ and 400, but the D180 isn't going anywhere soon.

I'm on the fence about the Sound City, I may sell but I'm fond of it and I ended up needing a lot of work done to it, so I don't know if I could get enough to cover what I have in it. It starts out sounding decent, and works its way into wickedly awesome once it's loud enough to distort. The cab is gone already, unlike the head it was nothing special just an old particle board thing with the pressed, oversized guitar speakers popular in days gone by.

BTW the Champ is right here next to me. It still rules.

i'm running a GBX 90 watter....thing KILLS. my only beef with it is the weight, and the buzzing. i plan on replacing the speakers eventually and probably getting the whole thing refurbished at a place in Ottawa. either way, these are great amps, mines just a 4x10 but they got 2x12's and eve 8x10's. and i ony paid 150 bucks for mine, but it was sitting in the guys basement for like 10 years and had mould and a bit of dry rot on the bottom. all in all though, great amp. i wouldnt mind a new amp still, bit for the price i paid i am not gonna whine too much about it :P

if you find one of the 4x10s for like 200 bucks, get it, same with the 8x10 but for 400. you wont regret it.
